| On the Yaeyama islands in Okinawa prefecture, it's believed that there is another world beyond the ocean called Niraikanai, which is variously described as a place of great happiness, a hellish, Hades-like underworld of phantoms, and a place where the spirits of the dead go. This photograph expresses my irrepressible longing for Niraikanai. Each time I visit those islands, my mind is filled with images of that faraway world. |
