The embodiment of engineering and art, photography has made me a happy man. - Hoshu Toyoda
Hoshu Toyoda's themes: "Yokohama in Time," "German Wind," and "From the Silent Forest," introduce viewers to rich world of alluring imagery, and lead them on journey of photographic discovery.
"As a photographer, I believe thorough research is essential."

When I was in my thirties, I moved to Ookurayama in Yokohama. Adopting the city as my theme, I searched all over for suitable subjects, and showed the photographs I took at a one-man exhibition entitled "Yokohama in Time." As a result of that exhibition, I started receiving commissions from newspapers and magazines for photoessays that combined both images and the written word. From that time, I developed an interest in writing that eventually led to me publishing a blog on the internet.

At the moment, there are three places I call home: Yokohama, the Shinshu region of Japan, and Germany. My wife likes to tease me by saying, "Why don't you write an autobiography? You could call it, 'A Tale of Three Cities.'" I fell in love with Shinshu while hiking, and now spend around 50 days a year in a house there located 1,400 meters above sea level. During my visits to the area I've learned a lot about the severity of nature, ecology, animals, and plants. Since nature can't tell us anything, I thought I should speak on its behalf. This idea drove me to take a series of photographs that were shown in another one-man exhibition entitled "From the Silent Forest". As always, when working on this project my motto was to thoroughly research the subject matter before taking any photographs. I believe improving oneself through study is the only way one can achieve satisfying results.

As for Germany, I've always been fond of it because it's the land of my favorite classical musicians such as Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Visiting the country has made me love it even more. The cities and towns are clean and tidy, the people are very friendly, and there is a high level of awareness of ecological issues. I seriously think it would be wonderful to live in such a country.
