"I never had any formal training - I simply learned by doing."

People often ask what led me to become a photographer. I tell them I simply like taking photographs, so it was a matter of course. It's true my father was also a keen photographer, but it wasn't really his influence that led me to it. I just love taking pictures - it's something I never get tired of. As a passion that continues to grow, it's the focus of all my energy.

I've been taking photographs of actresses and young female entertainers for some time now, but I never really served an apprenticeship or worked as anyone's assistant. It was quite by chance that I went to work as a temporary photographer for the advertising department of a talent agency. During my time there, I learned technique and tricks of the trade as I worked. I used to take photographs of all kinds of events, from weddings and parties to private receptions help by company presidents. I came into contact with many distinguished people, including a famous sculptor, who has since passed on, the mayor of Tokyo at the time, and even the prime minister. Being in charge of all aspects of the photo shoots was an extremely valuable learning experience. But I also kept myself busy taking photos for corporate staff ID cards - in those days, I'd take just about any job going.

Meanwhile, I became acquainted with agents working for record companies and editors of magazines, and I gradually started getting more jobs outside the company. So I decided to go freelance. During this period, I was truly fortunate in being able to experience many things that were beyond the reach of other people. It was a wonderful time for me.
