Reducing Waste and Recovering Resources : The Objectives and Performances in FY2006
Depletion of global resources is a serious problem. Olympus aims to achieve a circulation-oriented society as well as the production process consuming minimum amount of resources as possible.
Targets and Results for FY2006
Total waste (per unit of sales) reduced by 32% relative to the FY2000 level

Total volume of waste came to 5,238 tons, representing a 32% reduction per unit of sales as compared to the FY2000 level, indicating that we are making good progress toward the achievement of our FY2010 target. The reduction of waste in Japan reflects recent efforts in the recovery of valuable resources through effective sorting, as well as the benefits of business site integration. In Europe and North America, the volume of waste is on the rise, in part because of the expansion of experimental facilities. We will continue our efforts to minimize the quantities of resources used in our production activities.
In FY2006 we conducted audits of our main production and development sites in Japan with the aim of improving "zero emission" performance. In addition to tightening our voluntary management standards for appropriate waste disposal, we also improved waste management practices by providing education to waste disposal personnel.
