Reducing Waste and Recovering Resources : Activities in FY2007
Depletion of global resources is a serious problem. Olympus aims to achieve a circulation-oriented society as well as the production process consuming minimum amount of resources as possible.
Results for FY2007
Total waste (per unit of sales) reduced by 35% relative to the FY2000 level

The total volume of waste was 5,533 tons. The reduction of waste per unit of sales fell slightly short of the FY2007 target at 35% below the FY2000 level. Within Japan, disposals at landfills were reduced by means of increased efforts to recover valuable resources through effective sorting. However, increased production in overseas markets resulted in higher levels of waste, including liquid waste in Europe and North America, and plastic molding waste in China. We will further intensify our efforts to reduce waste from our overseas operations in order to achieve our 2010 target.
In FY200 we achieved our "minimization of landfill" target by reducing the final amount of waste disposal to less than 1% of the total amount of waste discharged at 10 domestic facilities.
Until June 2007, we achieved our "minimization of landfill" target for based on direct final disposal or final disposal after incineration. However, we also conducted a survey of final disposal of recycled waste and adopted a disposal method designed to reduce final disposal volumes through effective sorting and manual disassembly processes for each type of parts and materials. As a result, final disposal volumes have been reduced to 0.2% of total waste.
Changes in amounts of waste generation
Note1: Data of Overseas sites have been included since FY2005
Note2: Since FY2005, we have defined the amount of recycled waste in greater detail, resulting in changes to the data categories used compared with FY2004 and earlier years. The detailed categories for recycling amounts are valuable resources, circulated waste, waste reduction within the company, and recycled waste.
Note3: Since FY2005, we have revised the description of "Amount sent to intermediate treatment contractor" to "Amount of Landfilled Waste"
<Definition of Term>
Amount of Landfilled Waste:Disposed waste to be landfilled(combustible waste treated by the municipalities)
Amount of Recycled Waste: Waste sent to contractors for recycling
Amount of Valuable Resources: Wastes that the company could earn profit when disposed of.
Amount of Circulated Waste: Recyclable wastes generated from the company and reused in the company.
Amount of Reduced Waste within the Company: The amount of wastes reduced within the company.(using composts)
