Reducing Waste and Recovering Resources : Activities in FY2008
Depletion of global resources is a serious problem. Olympus aims to achieve a circulation-oriented society as well as the production process consuming minimum amount of resources as possible.
Results for FY2008
Total waste (per unit of sales) reduced by 37% relative to the FY2000 level

Minimization of landfill activities by Olympus includes appropriate waste processing, the reduction of final landfill disposal volumes, and the improvement of recycling rates. Olympus is also working to reduce the waste quantities at the discharge stage by improving its manufacturing processes.
Total waste discharges per unit of sales have been reduced by 37% from the fiscal 2000 level. Liquid waste discharges have been reduced through process changes and the use of concentration systems. Another factor has been the recovery of valuable resources through intensive waste sorting. These efforts have reduced the total amount of waste by approximately 500 tons (10%) compared with the fiscal 2007 total.
As a result of efforts to minimize landfill waste, final landfill disposals have been reduced to less than 0.5% of total waste produced at all production and distribution sites in Japan.
Future efforts will focus on the achievement of our fiscal 2010 target for total waste discharges per unit of sales. We will also continue to improve manufacturing loss rates and development manufacturing technology with the aim of minimizing landfill waste and reducing the quantities of waste that include valuable materials. In addition, we will enhance waste management through the company-wide introduction of an electronic manifest system.
Changes in amounts of waste generation
Note1: Total volume of waste consists of recyclable resources and final disposals at landfills.
