In FY2004, Olympus (Shenzhen) Industrial Ltd. strengthened its ISO 14000 Environmental Management System to further promote clean production activities and continuously carry out various environmental improvement activities. For example, their efforts included replacement of HCFCR22, one of the ozone-destroying substances used for air-conditioner coolant, by R418A, an alternative substance featuring a smaller destruction coefficient; shifting to more energy-saving lamps; renovation of the wastewater treatment system to increase its capacity; and improving the quality of the water in the plant pond. Each division of the company in Shenzhen added environmental preservation activity evaluation items in their own policy statement and carried them out according to the items. As these efforts were highly evaluated by the Shenzhen City Environmental Preservation Bureau and the Guangdon Province government, the public pollution monitoring status assigned to Olympus Industrial was changed from “Heavy Pollution Emitting Corporation (status requiring strict monitoring)” to “General Pollution Emitting Corporation (status requiring general monitoring)” in FY2004. Many employees are taking part in seminars on hazardous waste treatment and ISO 14001 internal environmental auditor training, which is a sign of enhanced environmental education. The company also carries out clean-up operations at the beach and on mountain trails as part of environmental preservation activities, thereby encouraging employees to be more sensitive to environmental conservation. Olympus Industrial accepts visitors from many corporations in answer to requests from the Environmental Preservation Bureaus of Shenzhen City and Guangdon Province.
