Olympus America, Inc. National Service Center (NSC)
Efforts of FY2005
The NSC began a program in 138P to reduce vehicle air emissions in the Bay Area. A carpooling program was introduced. Employees were encouraged to sign up for a zip code matching system that would match willing OMES employees living in the same area to car pool for work. Further a lottery with a $ 50 Gift Certificate was introduced for periodic drawing amongst those who carpooled. In addition, the NSC set up reserved car pool parking slots. The program was so successful that the initial target of having at least 50 less vehicle-days in 138P was exceeded to more than 350 less vehicle-days. The NSC will expand this program in 139P by adding mass transit programs and more reserved car pool parking slots. Also, the NSC has had a very active E-waste recycling program since 1998. End of life cycle medical equipment (endoscopes) and their associated electronics including monitors, computers, light sources, cables, circuit boards, printers, etc are collected at various locations throughout the NSC and periodically sent out to an external contracted processing facility where they are appropriately segregated or shredded and recovered for recycling by smelting metals and re-processing of plastics.
