Efforts of FY2005
a) Environmental Activities:
In May 2005, OLMEI completed a very successful ISO 14001: 1996 surveillance audit. All system improvement recommendations suggested by the auditor were implemented. A by-product of our effluent and reed bed system is "sludge" which is processed by a "Vermiculture" (Wormery) system. These worms turn the sludge into compost which is used on farm land after analysis. This system has been very successful as evidenced by the following data:
Vermiculture unit (Wormery) put in place in 2002.
Approximately 9,300 litres of sludge was digested by the unit from 2002-2005.
During this period only 200 Kilos of compost had been produced.
b) Community-based Environmental activities.
Environmental Students from a local university and secondary school in the region came to visit OLMEI on a field trip to learn about the reed bed and vermiculture system.
c) Social Contribution
OLMEI held the official Government Launch of the "County Clare Wood Energy Project". This project has been established to help create a functioning commercia-based wood heating market in the county. The company hosted this project because we are interested in replacing our oil fired heating systems with wood burning systems in the future. This strategy is complemented by the availability of over 100 acres of forestry on the company's farm. An indication of the potential can be seen from the fact that each tonne of woodchip replaces 400 litres of oil.
