Efforts of FY2005
In January 2006, Olympus Winter & Ibe GmbH (OWI) received certification of environmental partnership from the city of Hamburg, which honors the largest-scale cooperation between business and government authorities in northern Germany. The certificate recognizes the voluntary environmental efforts OWI has integrated into the production processes. For several years OWI has maintained the certification of the environmental management system acceptance to ISO 14001. The additional activities implemented for the constant efforts at making efficient use of natural resources in the production area led to the remarkable recognition.
Two major projects for the reduction of energy consumptions have been accomplished at OWI, which had been recognized by the Department of Urban Development for the governmental programs of resource protection. Both projects led to a significant reduction of electrical energy.
The first project covered the installation of a demand controlled lighting system for the manufacturing area. The new control system adjusts the ambient light conditions in order to distribute consistent lighting at each workplace. The operating systemadjusts demand for the electric light output automatically depending on the actual daylight and solar irradiation.
The second project covered the installation of a low energy cooling system for the manufacturing area. The specially designed system is able to run efficiently without additional cooling support for at least two thirds of the regular operating time by economic utilization of ambient temperature conditions.
Based on the efficient use of energy consumptions for both projects, a significant reduction of CO2 emissions has been certified by the government authorities.
