KeyMed (Medical & Industrial Equipment) Ltd.
Efforts of FY2006
KeyMed has made a major step forward in its waste management by bringing control of collection in-house. Until now KeyMed has relied on outside contractors to clear general waste from its various sites located in Southend on Sea. This has proved problematic and expensive with frequent missed collections with a resultant clean up and inconvenience. As a result of this KeyMed invested in a compactor and electric vehicle and general waste is now collected daily by KeyMed staff and transported to KeyMed's compactor. This has resulted in significantly reduced costs, superior control and the elimination of missed collections. Establishing more control of its general waste collection has also resulted in improved separation of different waste streams, with a consequent increase in the fraction sent for recovery and recycling.
KeyMed is also preparing for the imminent opening of its new Medical Device Manufacturing Centre. The building, which was started in 2005, features a number of innovative award winning technologies aimed at reducing its environmental load. The building is highly insulated and as well as ground source heat pumps to heat and cool the building it features solar water heating, rain water harvesting and various passive measures to ensure energy demand is minimized.
