Efforts of FY2006

The San Jose National Service Center (NSC) decided to reduce carbon emissions in FY2006 by reducing electrical energy consumption by 8%. This was achieved by installing occupancy light sensors in all common areas of the building. Also, the light switches in office areas were modified to turn on only one or two lamps out of three per fixture. An energy committee was constituted to review electrical consumption on a regular basis and come up with new energy conserving ideas. Employees were educated to turn off all energy consuming devices when not needed. In addition, solar film was installed on southern and western glass windows of the building to reduce solar heat load inside the building thereby reducing HVAC electrical consumption for cooling.

The NSC celebrated its first World Environment Day with multiple activities aimed at employees. Colorful displays on global warming, greenhouse gases and effects, and educational materials and talks related to energy savings at home, appliances selection, carpooling, mass transit, bicycling routes, solar energy, etc were delivered by outside experts. A quiz with multiple prizes was popular with employees.

The NSC reduced landfill disposal by over 50% by a vigorous segregation and recycling (internal and external) programs.
