Olympus America Inc. / Olympus Imaging America [Corporate Headquarters]: Efforts of FY2006

Since the dedication of our Center Valley, Pennsylvania headquarters last year, a number of additional programs have been initiated to supplement the facility's environmentally-responsible design. These include:

  • Recycling of waste office paper, plastic and aluminum beverage containers, corrugated cardboard, light bulbs, and computer/electronic scrap.
  • A site emergency response team, to address potential medical first aid and firefighting needs at the site.
  • Workstation ergonomics, making available articulating keyboards, adjustable monitor arms and other desktop accessories along with guidelines to maximize employee comfort.
  • Installation of playground equipment at our on-site Child Care Center, that not only exceeds safety standards but incorporates post-industrial and post-consumer recycled materials in its construction.

Targeting minimization of waste to landfill, the Reverse Supply Chain group at OIMA's Hauppauge, New York distribution center now collects for recycling components from units beyond economical repair. Electronic product waste, that previously was disposed in landfills, is now collected for metal, plastic and glass recycling. In three months of program implementation, over 4,000 pounds of such waste has been recycled. Alkaline and lithium battery recycling also continues, with close to 5,000 pounds recycled during this same time frame. A baler added to the distribution center facilitates corrugated cardboard recycling as well.

Olympus America Inc. (Irving Facility): Efforts of FY2006

The Diagnostic Systems Group facility in Irving, Texas continued its waste minimization/recycling initiatives in 2006. As a result, IT waste and repair center electronic scrap recycling has increased dramatically.

In efforts to assure a safer workplace, the site established a Health and Safety Committee representing all groups of facility and field personnel. Focusing on employees, contractors, visitors and others affected by our operations, the committee:

  • Identifies hazards, as well as unsafe working conditions and practices, through regular inspections;
  • Utilization of mechanical and physical safeguards to the maximum extent possible to eliminate or control such hazards;
  • Provides necessary personal protective equipment; and
  • Trains its employees in good health and safety management practices.
  • For calendar year 2006, OAI-Irving recorded zero occupational injuries and illnesses.

In conjunction with an Olympus Corporate sponsorship, participation in the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days® enabled Irving site personnel to join the Society's fight against cancer and raise funds to support lifesaving research, prevention, early detection, and patient support programs.

The site has also been conducting blood drives. Over the last two years, donations from these drives have saved the lives of 78 people-replacing red cells as well as supplying plasma and platelets for those in medical need in our surrounding community.
