Olympus America Inc. / Olympus Imaging America [Corporate Headquarters]: Efforts of FY2007
Environmental Activities
- CV cafeteria goes green:
Phased out the use of disposable polystyrene cups/plates/bowls with reusable, washable foodware and paper-based disposables that break down faster when disposed.
- Fleet vehicles:
New fleet vehicles are flex-fuel fired, with the ability to be powered on ethanol as well as gasoline.
Community-based CSR/ Environmental Activities
- Wildlands Conservancy:
Olympus held a cleanup event at the local conservation center in celebration of World Environment Day.
Olympus also co-sponsored a photo contest to celebrate the Lehigh River as Pennsylvania's River of the Year.
Social Contribution
- Visionary Volunteers Program:
Launched in January, 2007 (139P) the program now has over 270 registered employees. They volunteered over 3,500 hours for local community service in 2007. The company is also paying over $26,000 in "Dollars for Doers" grants to community organizations in recognition of the volunteer efforts of Olympus employees.
- CRC Awareness - We are supporting the efforts of Megan Longenderfer and MSG by having Olympus OnSite visit local CRC awareness events during March (Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month). In addition, Olympus was a major sponsor (through a grant from the MSG Grants Committee) of the Colon Cancer Challenge in New York City (Central Park) last Sunday, March 9 (www.coloncancerchallenge.org). There were 8,000 participants at this event. We have a lot of pictures from this event showing the large crowd and our sponsorship identification.
- Employee donation matching - We match the charitable contributions of our employees to qualified organizations at 100%. Participation in this program has increased significantly in the past year. For 140P, we have processed 169 employee donation match requests totalling over $35,000.
- Digital Wish (http://www.digitalwish.com/dw/digitalwish/home) - This new website continues our outreach to K-12 education. This project was developed by our business partner, Tool Factory, with a seed grant from Olympus and is co-branded. The site allows educators to put technology products--Olympus digital products and Tool Factory educational software--for their classrooms into a shopping cart and then reach out to their local communities for donations to acquire the products. It works very much like a wedding registry. This site also incorporates elements of social networking by letting teachers post and exchange lesson plans and communicate with one another.
- US Open: Arthur Ashe Kids Day - Olympus took a group of 18 young people with diverse backgrounds to this US Open event as our guests. The children were part of a program called Embrace Your Dreams, which uses the game of tennis to promote positive values, physical skills and sportsmanship. The day included transportation from the Lehigh Valley, admission to the event, food, refreshments, games and a chance to be photographed and get instruction from professional tennis star John Isner, now an Olympus spokesperson.
