Landfill Reduction:
Over the last 3 years the amount of general waste OLREI send to landfill has reduced by over 50%, from 5.4% in 2005 to 1.9% in 2008. A number of programmes were put in place to achieve this reduction over the years.
Waste ice packs, waste labels & waste blue trays were all removed & sent for recycling.
Ice packs are now being shipped to Olympus America where they are being reused.
Waste blue trays & labels are sent for recycling and are used in the production of outdoor signs such as Real Estate signs & magazine paper.
Wind Turbine Planning Permission Process
OLREI is currently waiting for the granting of planning permission for the installation of a Wind Turbine. OLREI already uses 100% Green Electricity but the goal is to reduce the demand on the National Grid by generating electricity from a Wind Turbine located on its own site.
Many different surveys had to be carried out as part of the planning permission process.
A Visual Impact Study has to be completed to assess the effects on the surrounding areas. Olympus created photo montages using computer modelling to show the exact views that surrounding neighbours will have of the Turbine.
A "Shadow Flicker Graph" for all of the surrounding houses and a noise survey also had to be completed. Other surveys included an Avian Survey, a Habitat Map and a Monument & Archaeology Impact Study.
The most interesting survey carried out was a bat survey. Several species of bat were identified on the farm including the Whiskered bat and the rare Lesser Horse Shoe bat. This test was carried out using a series of sonic recorders to hear the bat's sonar operating. Each type of bat has a distinctive sonar frequency which can be isolated. The Wind Turbine will not interfere with the bats natural habitat.
