KeyMed (Medical & Industrial Equipment) Ltd.
Efforts of FY2008
1) Environmental Activities
Olympus KeyMed (OKM) has been working towards corporate targets for environmental improvement set by Olympus Corporation for many years, but has not previously developed its own detailed plan.
OKM are now in the process of implementing a 5-Year Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) which is intended to extend beyond those corporate targets to provide a broader, more detailed, long-term strategy with the aim: "To achieve a measurable level of best practice and operational excellence in all identified environmental aspects".
The purpose of this project is not to achieve accreditation, but to implement environmental improvement. The EIP will work towards recognised European standards such as the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) & PAS2050:2008.
This approach of working to recognised standards ensures that progress and achievement can be independently validated and the company can be seen to achieve an internationally recognised level of environmental performance and sustainable development.
This project will follow OKM's proven "Measure - Challenge - Improve" management approach:
Phase I - Measure (March 2009)
In the initial phase, a baseline assessment of OKM to the BREEAM standard will be carried out. This will be set against a number of key performance indicators that are combined to produce an
overview score or achievement level.
Phase II - Challenge (April - June 2009)
The results of the baseline assessment will be used to prioritise and target areas for measurable improvement and produce a detailed Action Plan of activities with specific responsibilities and deadlines. The final, detailed Environmental Improvement Action Plan (EIAP) will be presented to the OKM Executive Committee for approval.
Phase III - Improve (July 2009 -)
The final phase is to implement and monitor the detailed Action Plan of activities to achieve the specified targets. This will be managed by the OKM Environmental team using the existing ISO14001:2004 certified management systems and progress will be reported to the OKM Executive Committee on a quarterly basis.
The 5-Year Environmental Improvement Action Plan will enable OKM to meet its own Environmental challenges, whilst as importantly, contributing towards Olympus being an environmentally progressive company in keeping with its "Social IN" philosophy.
This plan will be implemented by the following Environmental Team
2) Community-based CSR
OKM continues to work with local schools and colleges maintaining a high level of community support. Executive Committee members and Senior Management sit on school governing boards to play an active part in developing the schools business acumen and practical knowledge of task management.
OKM staff also engages with local charities to provide support and guidance especially to under privileged children in deprived areas.
3) Social Contribution
OKM has worked with Street Africa, a UK charity devoted to helping street children across Africa. This works in partnership with African organisations who adopt a street-based approach to seek out and befriend street children, offering
them guidance from trustworthy adults regarding medical care, baby care, skills training and a chance to choose a different path in life.
One particular project is "Meninos De Mozambique", an outreach centre established to provide health education, support and immediate medical treatment to the large number of destitute children living in the streets of Maputo. These children can be as young as eight years and they are constantly at risk from malnutrition, infection, violence or sexual abuse. Part of the work of Meninos de Mozmbique is to try and reintegrate the children with their families, but levels of poverty are such that the dangers of living on the streets are sometimes a more attractive option to them.
OKM has provided funding to support the running costs of the outreach centre for three years and has also provided some financial assistance with the planning and construction of a second centre.
The Meninos De Mozambique facility has been visited by Olympus KeyMed's Director of R&D and Manufacturing, Steve Brown, and more recently by Olympus KeyMed's Manufacturing Finance Manager, Catherine Harris. The picture below
shows some of the children that Meninos has been helping.
