Efforts of FY2008

1) The San Jose National Service Center (NSC) reduced annual landscape water consumption from 3,056 CCF to 2,385 CCF; a 22% reduction during California’s worst drought in 25 years. In addition biohazard waste was reduced by 28%. NSC employees continued to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions by taking alternate modes of transportation such as bus, rail, bikes and carpooling. An all time record of 4,438 fewer employee vehicle days was achieved during FY2008.

2) OMES branches in San Jose, Cleveland, Atlanta, Cypress, Boston, Dallas, Seattle and Chicago celebrated Earth Day. Employees brought in their small discarded personal-use consumer electronic items for a recycling disposal event organized at each branch. The San Jose NSC celebrated World Environment Day with multiple activities. Colorful displays on global warming, recycling, drought resistant plants, water conservation, carbon sequestration, and mass transit with educational materials and talks were delivered.

3) NSC employees donated 333 pounds of food (equal to 15,000 meals) for the Second Harvest Food bank of Santa Clara County and in recognition won a Gold Award. The San Jose NSC organized a blood donation drive in which 42 employees donated blood. NSC employees donated 67 gifts to needy children during the Christmas Family Giving Tree celebrations.
