Olympus Europa Holding GmbH

Efforts of FY2008

Environmental Activities:

The activities at Olympus Europa Holding GmbH (OEH) have been focused on the reduction of carbon dioxide emission supporting the corporate environmental targets. In order to involve all our employees, a campaign has been initiated for saving electrical energy consumption on the entire site facilities in Hamburg. Starting on the WED, an information and awareness event for all employees has been organized covering the potential energy savings at workplaces and the impact on the carbon dioxide reduction. The initial session included an information booth, where flyers and brochures were distributed and a practical demonstration for energy savings at workplaces was arranged.

Another highlight was the Green IT analysis workshop. Target of these activities were the increase of energy efficiency for IT hardware and software and respectively the reduction of costs and carbon dioxide emission for the entire IT lifecycle. Part of the analysis was the hardware installation from the server network to the users, the UPS power supply, the air-conditioning and the software applications. Significant changes have been implemented for the optimization of the hardware components and the virtualization of the server network, which led to a reduction of energy consumption of about 100.000 kWh for the first 12 months. More savings will be possible with the new standard for green PC and notebooks, which has been introduced early 2009.

Engaging in Society:

Olympus Europe has strengthened its' cooperation with the international medical humanitarian organization "Ärzte der Welt" (Physicians of the world).
Initiatives included the support of public relation activities such as the sponsoring of the Valtuena photography exhibition and award as well as the sponsoring of brochures describing the work and projects of "Ärzte der Welt". Furthermore Olympus Europe supported the organization by donating 50 Euro Cent for each Christmas Card we sent out.
Since January, 2009 Olympus employees located in Germany have the opportunity to donate the cent-amounts of their monthly salary pay. The donations of all employees are doubled by Olympus and contributed to the project "Mission Smile". Children of Cambodia, whose face is deformed through illness or acts of violence, can thus be saved from social exclusion through plastic surgery. With Payroll Giving small donations lead to a big aid.

Social Contribution:

The Olympus Europa Foundation has celebrated its' 20th anniversary. This charitable non-commercial organization was established by the Olympus group companies in 1988 and has been charged with a solid financial donation. The purpose of the foundation is the sustainable support of scientific research in the fields of endoscopic diagnosis and therapy, life science microscopy and scientific photography. In the last 20 years, the Olympus Europa Foundation supported about 86 projects in Europe with the total amount of 1.4 million Euro.
The anniversary celebration included a scientific workshop held at the Olympus Europe head offices in Hamburg, Germany. The event was supported by lectures from several former stipends and researchers presenting their scientific research projects and results.
