Reducing Waste and Recovering Resources : Policies

Depletion of global resources is a serious problem. Olympus contributes to construct a circulation-oriented society to achieve the production process consuming minimum amount of resources as possible.

Waste Reduction Concept

Sorting and Collection of Waste

Sorting and Collection of Waste

Since FY2002, Olympus has been working to reduce final waste disposal volumes and improve recycling ratios through its Minimization of Landfill Activities ProgramNote1. In FY2003, it completed Stage 1 of this minimization program, which targeted only final disposals at landfills. In FY2007, we undertook a number of measures to improve our waste minimization performance, including (1) the reduction of final disposal volumes for all types of waste, and (2) the implementation of site audits under newly adopted internal standards designed to ensure effective management of waste-related risks. We worked to reach these standards by reducing final disposal volumes through intensive waste sorting and manual disassembly.

We also implemented tougher risk management systems in partnership with waste disposal contractors. As a result of these efforts, we were able to achieve our FY2008 target two years ahead of schedule in FY2007. In addition to our Minimization of Landfill Activities Program, which aims to ensure appropriate disposal, reduce waste disposal volumes and improve recycling ratios, we will also continue our efforts to reduce waste at the source.

Note1: Under the Olympus Minimization of Landfill standard, we aim to reduce final disposals at landfills to less than 1% of total waste discharged, while also meeting our voluntary standards for the appropriate disposal of waste.
