Green Electric Energy
Carbon 1/2 by 2020 is the core target for all our environmental activities at the Olympus Group in Europe. One of our main CO2 emission sources was the procured electric energy. From the beginning of the last fiscal year, we could reach zero emissions associated with electric energy consumption.
Since 1 April 2010, the Olympus European Headquarters uses electric energy with does not emit carbon dioxide during generation. The electric energy is generated by water and wind power plants in Europe. This helps on our way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, in general. This change of electric energy procurement lead to a significantly reduced carbon dioxide emission by 2,541 tons CO2 per year, compared with fiscal year 2007.
Ride your Bike to work
To promote the most environmentally friendly way of commuting, OEH supports employees who like to commute with their bikes to work.
During the summer months June, July and August, Olympus staff is invited to use their bicycles for their daily trip to the workplace in Hamburg City South.
During our Olympus Day on June 11, we offered all employees a safety check of their bike, free of charge. A group of three professional mechanics checked brakes, lighting and gear shift and made smaller adjustments in front of our building.
This campaign helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Electric Energy Saving Campaign
On the other hand, our efforts to reduce the consumption of electric energy are ongoing.
During environment day, we installed an information booth to promote the use of energy saving power switches.
During Olympus Day, every visitor of the booth was invited to receive an introduction how to save electric energy during work time. Some of the IT equipments are consuming a considerable amount of power on stand-by or even when switched to "off". To eliminate such useless energy loss, we handed out power connectors that will be installed between the wall plug and the office equipment at the personal workplace. The message is: "Power off your equipment whenever possible."

The energy bike is a unique electric energy generator, converting mechanical into electrical energy. A normal bicycle with the rear wheel connected with an electricity generator.
Peter Gaedicke, Head of Corporate Quality Management, tests the Energy Bike with high output.
On the display, the mechanical and electric energy could be read and compared. The best result was 279 Watts of electric power generated.
