[Tainaka] We didn't have a predetermined concept in mind when we started to design the PEN E-PL1. I think we were searching for a happy landing for both design and concept. The camera gradually started to take shape out of a cloud of vague ideas.
During this trial-and-error process, I continued to think about how we could create a design that would become an integral part of people's lifestyles. My eventual destination was a design with space. The inclusion of space in the design created a sense of openness that engendered a natural affinity toward the camera. I had previously created designs by focusing on each individual detail, so this was a new discovery for me.
Does something about the finished design of the PEN E-PL1 seem to suggest that the camera is smiling?
[Kaminaga] For this project, I also focused on language design. The new Live Guide system helps users to capture exactly the pictures they want intuitively. Live Guide uses everyday language and avoids specialized terminology, such as "ISO," "aperture" and "white balance." For example, we used familiar words on the screen used to control saturation. One of the options is "clear and vivid," and the opposite of that is perhaps "indistinct and subdued," but we chose instead the words "flat and muted", which evoke an image of calmness and tranquility.
The photographic guide feature is packed with essential tips and expertise that can totally change the way photographs look. I'm sure that even beginners without the experience needed to visualize the images they want to capture are inspired to try creating their own pictures using these techniques.
