Mineko Orisaku

Mineko Orisaku was born in Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture. While she was still a student, a friend entered a photo of her in a contest, and before she knew it, Orisaku found herself representing Japan at the 1981 Miss Universe Pageant. During her reign as a Miss Universe candidate, she met photographer Shoji Ohtake, and joined his studio his studio in 1982. In 1987, she began her freelance career, traveling the world taking photographs of people and places from her own unique perspective. She has held numerous exhibitions throughout Japan, and when not busy with her duties as a Professor of Photography at the Osaka University of Arts, she often gives public lectures and appears on television.

On the wonder of photography

Traveling to new places and meeting new people, there is always something I want to photograph. And the simple act of pressing the shutter release, creates a bond with each subject. So although we go our separate ways, there is something that lingers between us . . .

Repeating this process over and over, my mind freed from idle thoughts, is one of the greatest joys I know.

I was in Switzerland for a shoot on May 27, 2007 when it suddenly snowed. It was so unexpected, I felt like a child at Christmas. I was staying at the Hotel Rosenlaui, a lovely little hotel full of old-world charm that made the scene outside look so romantic . . . Just then a herd of cattle appeared, and the scene became almost dream-like. It was a strange and wonderful day, dream-like and real at the same time.
