Mr. Makino:
Although Japan fell behind in the first phase of genome research, is there any chance that it can rebound through innovation of equipment for its analysis? Also, what are the areas where this genome analysis equipment will be used?

Dr. Oishi:
The areas of use will expand from now on. In my opinion, the development of equipment for DNA analysis is still at a primitive level.

Mr. Makino:
Last fall, Olympus announced the development of Oligonucleotide Probe Sequence Design Software for genetic analysis and we are promoting it as a technology for the "post-genome era." What do you think about the "post-genome sequence era?"

Dr. Oishi:
The second generation of genome research is so-called functional genomics which pursues not only DNA structure but also its function. We are rapidly moving into that direction. The other aspect that must be emphasized is agriculture-related genome research. Although there are many types of plants, their genes are believed to be all very similar.
