A new concept is crystallizing, one that aims to enhance the efficiency of our business as a manufacturer and increase the speed and precision of our services by allowing us to obtain comprehensive information concerning every aspect of our work, from manufacturing through sales to customers. Olympus was one of the first to begin work on the SCM concept, and has already started operating its key systems, the Global Post Office (GPO) and the Global Supply Chain Database (G-SCDB). As a first step toward making the system work in the optical equipment sector, the foundations for a Web-based information-sharing network for the entire Olympus Group at home and overseas will be established in March 2002. We interviewed the staff involved in developing the systems necessary for SCM and in operating its functions.
