With increased popularity, the MIC-D heralds a new era of digital microscopy

----How has the MIC-D performed from a marketing perspective?

Kanao:
We get lots of inquiries when we do sales visits to hospitals and other institutions. When we showed the MIC-D to a doctor and suggested that he buy it for his grandchild, he said he wanted one for himself, and indeed he bought one. He did not want to use it for research, but simply to have it on his desk so that he could enjoy looking at interesting images. There are many doctors like that.

----Is there any demand in the business world?

Kanao:
Yes. Many ticket brokers use them. Another person used one to examine straw ropes that had been soaked in seawater. He was involved in the edible seaweed cultivation business. We receive many inquiries from people outside of the educational sector, including veterinarians and printers.

Osa:
Those who are well-informed about microscopes know that the MIC-D is a real bargain at yen99,800.

Hirano:
The teachers who participated in the monitor survey later introduced the MIC-D to other school teachers.

----Another factor is the need to halt the decline in the popularity of science among children.

Osa:
I love science, and I owned a cheap microscope when I was a child. The important thing is for children to be interested, even if they later become interested in telescopes rather than microscopes. As they observe all kinds of things through the MIC-D, their interest will start to take shape. I hope that one day a Nobel laureate will tell the world that his or her first microscope was a MIC-D. In fact, many of today's great scientists have used MIC microscopes.

Kanao:
People are likely to use the MIC-D for purposes that we never anticipated.

Osa:
Though we developed the MIC-D primarily for educational uses, it is also a marketing probe for us. The factory staffs have taken great care to ensure that it functions properly as a microscope, but some people will be dissatisfied with the specifications. For example, the lighting may not be strong enough. We will gratefully receive such feedback and use it for the next stage of development. Digital microscopes will become increasingly specialized in the future. The MIC-D is the perfect starting point for this process.
