Tomonori Aoyama
Specialized in electronic information science at the University of Tokyo. After completing his master's course, he joined NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.). His research there centered on communication systems and communication networks. He held various posts, including: Head of the Optical Electronics Research Institute (1994); and Director of the Optical Network System Research Institute (1995). In 1997 he returned to the University of Tokyo and is currently a professor of electronic information science at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Information Science and Technology.

In his capacity as Chairman of the Digital Cinema Consortium, he has carried out research and promotion activities related to digital cinema technology. Among his major publications are, as author and editor, Broadband ISDN and ATM technology and Optical communications engineering, and, as executive editor, Generating money with the latest broadband.

While developing advanced technology for Olympus in the field of electronic imaging, he has also been investigating how digital imaging can be applied in the business setting. Most notably, he acted as a leader in the development of a high-resolution 4.2 megapixel digital camera, released in 1997. In May 2002 he succeeded in the development of a prototype super high-fidelity digital movie camera with a resolution of 8.0-megapixels, or four times greater than the resolution achieved by HiVision (high-fidelity TV). He has been exploring applications in digital cinema, the medical sector and other fields, leading to new business opportunities. Despite his busy work schedule, for the sake of his health, he participates in the Olympus campaign that urges employees to walk 10,000 paces per day.

His main responsibilities are overseeing development of cameras and display systems. Since developing a large 100-inch, high-resolution display, he has been continuously engaged, jointly with the business division, in the development of Vision Plex, an automatic image compensation device. It is currently undergoing testing at soccer games and concerts as a projector of super high-resolution video images shown on large screens. He is totally committed to providing images that will have an enormous impact at big international events. In his spare time he likes to play igo. His philosophy is that it is best to proceed one step at a time, carefully thinking things over and working out overall strategies. His favorite novels and movies are historical action stories featuring samurai warriors.
