Successful delivery of the next generation of medical technology by the Life Science Group (*1)
|
 |
*1---Business areas of the Life Science Group, which aims to further boost its operations in the life science field, chiefly in genome medicine, to help develop next-generation medicine.
|
The panel discussion included herein was held at the Olympus Ina Plant located
in the city of Ina, Nagano Prefecture. This meeting of a researcher and user
of microscopes and a technician engaged in the fabrication and assembly of microscopes
was planned by Yasuhiro Ueda, Division Manager of the Life Science Planning Division
at the Life Science Group, who also served as facilitator on the panel.
In 2001, the Olympus Corporation introduced a system of internal companies to
enable faster response to the changing needs of customers, an initiative that
saw the creation of the Imaging Systems Group, Medical Systems Group(*) and Industrial
Systems Group. In April 2003, the Life Science Group was formed following reorganization
of the Medical Systems Group. According to Yasuhiro Ueda, the main challenge
for the group now is "to strengthen our businesses in the life science field,
especially in genome medicine, and capture leadership in next-generation medicine".
As a further stimulus to the business, April 2004 saw the formation and/or renaming
of the Biomedical Business Incubation Division, Bioscience Division and Diagnostic
Systems Division. The Ina Plant with its microscope manufacturing facilities
became part of the Bioscience Division, and is now expected to grow from an organization
that simply focuses on microscope technology, to one that brings new levels of
value to research equipment systems. Incidentally, the Diagnostic Systems Division
for its part is aiming to set up new ventures incorporating genome medicine based
on clinical testing systems such as automated analysis systems for use in biochemistry.
This was actually the first meeting for Wakayama and Miyazawa.

(*)Imaging System Group and Medical System Group have become two
separate subsidiary companies as of October 1, 2004.
