Hirofumi Tsuchida
was born in Okayama Prefecture in 1958. He studied applied physics at Osaka
University and took a postgraduate degree there. Since joining Olympus in 1984
he has been involved in the design of lenses for cameras and microscopes. About
10 years ago Tsuchida developed a low-dispersion gradient index (GRIN) lens.
He also led the development of a free-form-surface prism optical system, which
was announced in 2004 as a new type of compact lens for use in mobile telephones.
He initiated the Olympus "Waku Waku Project" and has supported the
project as a volunteer. Since 2003 he has organized and participated in science
seminars designed to teach elementary school children to appreciate the fascination
and fun of science. The seminars are held every three months in Hachioji City,
where Tsuchida works. |
