Olympus products are widely regarded as the industry standard in the field of endoscopy. But there is another Olympus product that has become the global standard in its field. We refer to the PK Series of automatic transfusion testing systems. In the past all blood typing and testing for infectious diseases were performed manually by clinical technicians. Olympus' success in the development of fully automated systems for these tasks owes much to the extensive cooperation provided by the Hokkaido Red Cross Blood Center (the "Hokkaido Center"). The Olympus technology development team worked closely with blood testing technicians at the Hokkaido Center to enhance and refine the technology, and the Director of the Center has played a key role in promoting the use of the systems. As a result, the PK Series has become the standard in Japan, and the systems are also widely used in other countries.
Recently Olympus technicians and staff from the Hokkaido Center met to reminisce about the joint development project. What inspired them to create these revolutionary products?
