Hisami Ikeda was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1940. Formerly professor of clinical pathology at the Asahikawa Medical College, he was appointed Director of the Hokkaido Red Cross Blood Center in April 1999. As a scientist with a background in basic medical science (experimental pathology), he chose the field of transfusion medicine because of his interest in the physiological reactions that occur during donor transfusions, which are kind of transplant procedure, and in the prevention of adverse physiological reactions. His hobbies are golf and trekking.
