In June 2007 Olympus and Riken, Japan's leading science research organization, established a full-scale collaborative research facility within the Riken Brain Science Institute (Riken BSI). The new Riken facility will be known as the Riken BSI Olympus Collaboration Center (Riken BOCC).
The mission of Riken BOCC is to develop technology for advanced fluorescent imaging equipment that can be used in frontier research, through close collaboration with scientists involved in pure research in the field of brain science, and to disseminate observation technologies widely among brain scientists.
For this article, we visited Riken President Professor Ryoji Noyori, who won a Nobel Prize for Chemistry. In the interview, we discussed issues relating to the practical use of pure research, the relationships between scientists and businesses, and the cultural dimension that science and technology must have to meet the future needs of society, from a broad range of perspectives.
