On June 1, 2007, the Riken BSI Olympus Collaboration Center (Riken BOCC) was established within the Riken Brain Science Institute (BSI) as a base for research collaboration between Riken and Olympus. The new center will be a forum for next-generation life science research based on medium-term and long-term perspectives. Riken and Olympus will share their respective research resources.

Riken aims to create a "baton zone" system through which it will actively return the benefits of its pure research to society. In February it established the Industry Collaboration Center system in preparation for establishing centers for comprehensive collaboration with companies. Riken BOCC is the first of these centers.

Goals include the development and dissemination of new technology in the field of advanced bio-imaging, as well as support for research and human resource development.

Olympus will provide Riken BOCC with its most advanced bio-imaging systems, together with two engineers. Initially the following three activities will be carried out over a three-year time-frame.

• Technology Development
Riken BOCC will develop new optical equipment and technologies that can be shared. It will also assess prototypes developed by Olympus.

• Research Support
Support for bio-imaging operations and observations will include the installation of optical equipment for bio-imaging, and the preparation of specimens.

• Dissemination and Technology Transfers (Education, Training)
Riken BOCC will disseminate bio-imaging knowledge and transfer technology through educational and training activities, including training programs, workshops, symposiums at Riken and other sites, and seminars to announce research results. The Center will also encourage networking among scientists and engineers.

Riken BSI and Olympus have collaborated in the past on the development of bio-imaging technology based on fluorescent proteins. Riken BOCC was established to provide a framework for even closer collaboration toward the development of new life science innovations.
