Exhaustive Pursuit of A Remarkably Tough Construction
that is Splash- and Dust-Proof

---- You also stress the camera's toughness...

All parts of the body and the lens are properly sealed.

The splash- and dust-proof design keeps out sand, dust, rain and splashes
Kataoka:
It's also superior in terms of its toughness and splash- and dust-proof construction. As we pursued a more closed construction that avoids separate external parts as much as possible and keeps out splashes and dust, we managed to create an overall structure with just three main sections, compared with four or five with conventional cameras. It's easy to say "just three main sections," but it's almost impossible to deal with a structure as deeply complicated as this using only conventional technology. Even before we delivered drawings to our external suppliers, we moved back and forth with 3D images as we pushed ahead with the design. Is the product easy to make, using mass production, and do the functions satisfy requirements properly? Cost is also very important. After further consideration, we adopted the "thixomold" technology instead of the conventional diecast method.

---- What is "thixomold"?

Ogasawara:
Using an approach similar to plastic extrusion molding, a magnesium alloy is dissolved at lower temperatures than conventional die-casting to enhance its fluidity, then extruded to mold the exterior casing.

Kataoka:
Using "thixomold" allows slide-type molds to be made and there is very little flash, resulting in the proper formation within the mold. Even small holes offer high precision, and there are relatively few surfaces that require secondary processing.

The thixomold method uses magnesium alloy to create a camera body that can withstand the harshest conditions of use.

Since the E-3 is equipped with a movable monitor, there is no need for a recess hole on the back panel, while the entire back panel is covered with magnesium alloy to provide the body with even greater rigidity.

Ogasawara:
The "thixomold" method has been available for around ten years, but companies have only recently brought it up to the level where it can be used in practice. It's used to mold the camera's exterior casing using only magnesium, and in only three parts. It's unlikely that anyone else has mastered the technology to the same extent as Olympus. The body is extremely strong. We believe we can boast to the world about our exterior casing technology.
Our sales team reports that its high quality image, mobility, and outstanding reliability are key marketing points. When they visit dealers, our sales team members probably stand on this camera. They want to demonstrate just how robust it is.
