The gastrointestinal tract is a pathway through the body to digest and absorb food, starting at the mouth and passing through the esophagus, stomach, intestines, and finally the rectus. Endoscopes are indispensable for examining the gastrointestinal tract to determine the presence of disease and remove tissue when required.
Enabling direct, real-time internal observations, endoscopes have found additional uses for highly accurate examinations of the esophagus, stomach, and large intestine. In addition, they are useful for procedures such as removal of suspicious lesions for pathological examination, extracting accidentally ingested foreign objects and removing polyps. Compared to open abdominal surgery, minimally invasive therapy performed with endoscopes is anticipated to reduce patient burdens.
