Olympus Establishes New Company in Singapore
to Focus on Information Equipment R&D |

| Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. (President: Masatoshi Kishimoto) has established a new company, "Olympus Technologies Singapore Pte. Ltd. (OTS)," which will primarily engage in R&D of products related to information equipment. The new company will commence operations in April 2000. |

Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. established Olympus Singapore Pte. Ltd. in 1989, and it has been promoting market development and sales in Southeast Asia. Building on this, the company has established the fully-owned, local subsidiary, OTS, as a new center in the information equipment business that will respond to rapid changes in the market and make use of Singapore's international business infrastructure.
The market in the information equipment business is changing rapidly, and it demands the technological capacity to survive intense competition and the construction of a new business model on a global scale. Olympus has established a new, technology-oriented company that will focus on R&D, taking advantage of the manufacturing infrastructure in Singapore, where conditions are ideal for international business development. The aim is to construct a new business model for the world originating in Singapore.
By fiscal 2002, OTS is aiming to achieve sales of 16 billion yen and have about 50 employees, mainly engineers. The company will make total R&D investments of about 2 billion yen during the two years. OTS will seek to independently carry out the full range of business activities including marketing for information and imaging related products, chiefly for the products of Olympus' Information Peripheral Division, development, planning, production, sales and service. At present, OTS plans to develop, manufacture and sell barcode scanners and terminals, Face Mounted Displays (Eye-Trek) and magneto-optical disc devices, which are all Information Peripheral Division products. In addition, the company plans to independently develop the Asian market, supplying OEM products as well as marketing Olympus brand goods. As the company does not have its own production facilities, it will seek partnerships with local contract manufacturers to produce "global quality" at "local cost." |
