Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. (President: Tsuyoshi Kikukawa) is pleased to announce the new TURBO MO mini EX, a compact, lightweight, user-friendly magneto-optical drive for 3.5-inch 640 MB disks starting on August 1.
Announced last October, this new addition to the Olympus TURBO MO series offers superb reliability and performance in a compact package suitable for mobile users who want to carry it with their portable computers. The unit is the same size as a paperback book (119mm x 151mm).

The TURBO MO mini EX also comes in a very attractive, stylish body. With the TURBO MO mini EX, the designers sought to create an elegant style unlike the previous design concept of cute one. The stylish metallic silver exterior is enhanced on each side with holographic images of the TURBO MO mini EX logo, which symbolizes a rapidly spinning magneto-optical disk. The attractiveness of the design is further enhanced by gold-plated screws and contrasting dark gray side panels. The entire size of the TURBO MO mini EX has also been reduced to 86% of that of the current TURBO MO mini.

During the introductory campaign for the TURBO MO mini EX, Olympus is supplying the new drive complete with the "GAZO for MO" digital photo album software. This easy-to-use package allows users to catalogue and edit images from digital cameras and other sources.
Main Features
Elegant design
The TURBO MO mini EX's design concept "elegant style." The stylish metallic silver exterior is enhanced on each side with holographic images of the TURBO MO mini EX logo, which symbolizes a rapidly spinning magneto-optical disk. The attractiveness of the design is further enhanced by gold-plated screws and contrasting dark gray side panels.

User-friendly design with simple set up
In addition to a simple USB connection, it also comes with a Quick Start Guide that explains the procedure from connection to starting use in beginner's terms, so even set up is problem-free.

Compact, lightweight design
The predecessor, TURBO MO mini, has achieved a 48% size reduction over the company's existing TURBO MO 640S III because of adopting DUODC (Direct USB Optional Disk Controller) unique to Olympus and a new pickup mechanism. The TURBO MO mini EX has succeeded in reducing further 14% in size over its predecessor model due to revising its space among the mechanism. It weighs only 510g.

High reliability and maintenance-free design
The exclusive dustproofing system, which enjoys an ever stronger reputation, along with the fanless design, prevents the inflow of external air and dust, thus maintaining a high level of dustproof performance and high reliability. There is no need for an air filter or lens cleaner.

Super silent mechanism
The energy conserving design has eliminated the need for a cooling fan. In addition, the adoption of a unique body design produces silent operation that causes no disturbance even when used late at night.

Direct overwriting and full disk compatibility
The TURBO MO series is compatible with direct overwrite (OW) disks. When a direct OW disk is used, the writing speed is approximately 50% faster than writing to a conventional disk. It also features full backward compatibility for both reading and writing, enabling selection of appropriate disk for every need.

Notes
* Direct USB Optical Disk Controller (DUODC)
* New pickup mechanism
The drive features a single-loop pickup system as opposed to a conventional separate pickup system composed of fixed and moving parts. This has allowed a reduction in size, weight and cost. In addition, the mechanism is controlled by the DCP (Drive Control Processor), a dedicated control LSI which produces an optimal operating environment in combination with the 2 MB Super Intelligent Cache.
*Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. was changed to OLYMPUS CORPORATION as of October 1, 2003.
