HIGH-PERFORMANCE 4.3X ZOOM LENS |
The high-performance, 28 - 120mm 4.3x zoom lens features 15 elements in 10 groups, with 4-group zoom construction. Multi-coated, precision optical glass lenses assures outstanding sharpness and clarity, with an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element for reduced chromatic aberration. The wide zoom range provides unparalleled all-in-one shooting flexibility -- from dramatic, 28mm wide-angle shots to intimate, 120mm telephoto portraits.

VERSATILE EXPOSURE MODES FOR ENHANCED SHOOTING EASE |
Outstanding ease of use is assured by a convenient Mode select button that gives users instant access to Program AE, Aperture-Preferred AE, and Long Time shooting modes. When set to Program AE mode, users are offered a further choice of Full Auto, Stop Action, Portrait, Night Scene, and Landscape modes (described below). In Aperture-Preferred mode, photographers can control depth of field by setting the aperture; shutter-speed selection is automatic. In Long Time mode -- which is designed for creative nighttime photos of moving traffic, fireworks, or star-filled skies -- the aperture is fixed at F8 and a choice of 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30, and 60 sec. timed exposures is offered.

DIRECT MODE SELECT BUTTON |
By simply pressing the Direct Mode Select Button, photographers can explore the advantages of SLR performance, confident that the results will be all that they want. The icons are easy to understand, and there are four modes suited to the range of situations.
Full Auto Mode: Provides point-and-shoot convenience that allows photographers to respond instantly to any photo opportunity.
Stop Action Mode: Freezes fast-moving subjects by automatically selecting the fastest shutter speed at which correct exposure can be achieved, up to a maximum of 1/2000 sec. In addition, it activates predictive autofocusing to help keep the subject in focus.
Portrait Mode: Emphasizes the foreground subject by automatically selecting the largest aperture at which correct exposure can be achieved, thereby creating a shallow depth-of-field that blurs distracting background elements. The flash also fires with every shot (unless the pop-up flash is closed), and if the shutter speed is above 1/100 sec., Super FP flash is automatically used to assure correct synchronization.
Night Scene Mode: Assures that both foreground subjects and background scenery are properly exposed when shooting at night. Uses the flash to illuminate the foreground (unless the pop-up flash is closed), and a slow shutter speed (max. 4 sec.) to capture background lights and scenery.
Landscape Mode: Assures crisp focus when taking landscape photos or group photos with scenery in the background.

MACRO CLOSE-UP CAPABILITY AT ANY ZOOM SETTING |
When in Macro mode, macro shooting from as close as 60cm is possible at any zoom setting. Shooting range is up to 1/4.8x (115 x 171mm).
|
GN20 HIGH-POWER TWIN FLASH SYSTEM |
The IS-500 is equipped with a compact, yet powerful, twin flash system with two flashtube elements. The high-power flashtube, which provides flash for telephoto shots, has a guide number of 20 (in meters, ISO 100). Maximum flash range is 8.4 meters when shooting with ISO 400 color negative film. The other flashtube, which provides intelligent variable-power flash for wide-angle shots, has a guide number of 13 (in meters, ISO 100). Flashtube selection is automatically determined by the zoom setting.
|
INTELLIGENT VARIABLE-POWER FLASH SYSTEM |
An Intelligent Variable-Power Flash System regulates flash intensity according to subject distance and ambient light level, assuring correct exposure of flash portraits and close-ups. In addition, the system detects the presence of artificial light and provides Auto Color-Balancing Flash when the subject is illuminated by fluorescent or other artificial light sources. An added bonus is provided by Super FP flash, which provides flash synchronization at shutter speeds up to 1/2000 sec.
|
|
VERSATILE FLASH MODES |
The IS-500 offers a choice of Auto Flash, Fill-In Flash, and Red-Eye Reduction modes. In Auto Flash mode, the flash fires in low light, backlight, and artificial light; in Fill-In Flash mode, it fires with every shot regardless of lighting conditions; in Red-Eye Reduction mode, the series of lower-powered pre-flashes fires before the main flash is triggered. All flash modes are disabled when the pop-up flash is closed.
|
LARGE, REAR-MOUNTED LCD PANEL |
A large LCD panel on the back of the camera allows photographers to confirm mode settings and shooting parameters at a glance.
|
REAL-IMAGE ZOOM VIEWFINDER |
The real-image zoom viewfinder is equipped with LED indicators for autofocus, flash charge and exposure, as well as a spot frame and autofocus frame.
|
HIGH-PRECISION AF SYSTEM WITH CMOS LINE SENSOR |
The high-precision autofocus system uses a CMOS line sensor to assure outstanding accuracy in low-light situations. In fact, the sensor is so sensitive that focusing remains accurate even when it so dark that the subject is barely visible to the human eye.
|
SPOT METERING |
In addition to fuzzy-logic ESP and center-weighted average metering (selection automatically determined by shooting mode and lighting conditions), the IS-500 is equipped with spot metering that can be used to lock-in exposure settings for a particular area of the frame.
|
EXPOSURE COMPENSATION |
Exposure compensation of +-2EV can be set in 1/2-step increments.
|
DIOPTRIC ADJUSTMENT |
The viewfinder eyepiece features dioptric adjustment of -2 to +1 diopters that can be set to suit the photographer's preference.
|
DATE/TIME IMPRINTING* |
If desired, the date/time of shooting can be imprinted on each frame.
