Olympus Publishes Environmental Report 2002
Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. (President: Tsuyoshi Kikukawa) is pleased to announce the publication of the Olympus Environmental Report 2002 (Japanese version, 41 pages), which provides a summary of the environmental initiatives of the Olympus Group during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2002. Olympus plans to issue an English version in late August.
The report is available in printed format as well as online at Olympus' web site.
The Olympus Environmental Report 2002 provides a broad look at the environmental initiatives of the Olympus Group's 13 main domestic development and production facilities during fiscal 2002 (April 2001 to March 2002). Olympus has made every effort to comply with the Environmental Reporting Guidelines (Fiscal Year 2000 Version) of Japan's Ministry of the Environment in the organization and content of the report.
Highlights of the Olympus Environmental Report 2002
1) Introduces specific efforts to increase coverage of content specified in the Environmental Reporting Guidelines.

2) Includes a Highlights section that provides a quick overview of environmental protection activities in fiscal 2002. Reports on the outcome of initiatives taken as part of the 99 Environment Basic Plan, Olympus' previous medium-term environmental plan.

3) Provides detailed information on steps for assessing the environmental impact of products, complete with specific product examples.

4) Reports on major progress in reducing environmental load in terms of energy conservation, recycling and waste reduction, and lower use of the chlorinated solvent trichloroethylene (TCE).

5) Detailed introduction of risk management in terms of organizational structure, environmental management and assessment, surveys of soil and groundwater pollution, etc.

6) Contains environmental load data and environmental accounting figures for Olympus' 13 main domestic facilities. Data is provided in aggregate as well as broken down by facility. Environmental load data for principal overseas production facilities is reported separately.
The Olympus Group is pursuing environmental activities according to the 02 Environment Basic Plan, the Group's medium-term environmental plan starting in fiscal 2003. Olympus is looking to step up efforts toward environmentally conscious management, and priority measures include the development of environmental technologies and environmentally friendly products, efforts toward zero emissions, and the pursuit of comprehensive group-wide environmental management.
Olympus plans to issue an environmental report every year as part of its effort to communicate with customers, shareholders, and other interested parties.
