The OLYMPUS PEN E-PL2 is an interchangeable lens camera compliant with the Micro Four Thirds System standard. It is the latest addition to the OLYMPUS PEN series of new generation system cameras.

The E-PL2 was designed to offer users an easy entry to the world of system cameras. It offers the user-friendliness of the E-PL1's (March 2010) simple interface, compact size, and light weight, as well as the excellent operability and design. The new E-PL2 also features new features that provide users with more ways than ever to enjoy photography itself, not only while shooting, but afterwards as well.

To make it easy even for novices to take full advantage of the photographic power of the SLR, the E-PL2 features a new user interface called "New Live Guide", an enhanced version of the Live Guide interface*1 originally featured on the E-PL1. All the user has to do is follow the guidance provided by the New Live Guide interface. Right away, they will be able to take pictures that turn out exactly as desired by setting image brightness, hue and background defocusing with intuitive dial operation. The New Live Guide interface also works in movie shooting.

The highly acclaimed Art Filters have also been improved with selectable Art Filter variations that allow users to apply a variety of moods and effects to each filter and an Art Effect function that adds various composition effects to the Art Filters. With the addition of picture composition effects, users will be able to create truly unique images that express their individual creative vision. The Art Filters themselves now include the popular "Dramatic Tone" effect, first available on the E-5, which applies dramatic tones of light and shade based on local changes in contrast. All six Art Filter effects can also be applied in movie recording.

The E-PL2 is a true system camera. More extendable than previous entry-level cameras, the E-PL2 features a new Accessory Port 2 extension terminal that can accept the VF-2 Electronic Viewfinder, the SEMA-1 Stereo Microphone Set 1, or any one of the new accessories announced together with the E-PL2 such as the OLYMPUS PENPAL PP-1 Communication Unit*2 or the MAL-1 Macro Arm Light. The newly launched optional accessories also include three different lens converters including the FCON-P01 Fisheye Converter, the WCON-P01 Wide Converter and the MCON-P01 Macro Converter. When a lens converter is attached to the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 II standard zoom lens and the scene modes exclusive to that converter are loaded in the camera, users will be able to take advantage of new photographic possibilities made possible by changing the angle of view.

Several new camera functions have been added, which not only make the camera easier to use, they enhance performance and help ensure high-quality results. Perhaps the most notable is an Eye detect function to improve the effectiveness of the face detection AF by adjusting focus automatically on the subject's eyes when shooting a relatively large image of a person. Operability has been enhanced with a big, bright, easy-view 3.0-inch, 460,000-dot LCD monitor and a rugged control dial. The control dial can be used for quick exposure compensation during shooting and quick frame advance during playback. A convenient Movie button lets users switch instantly to HD movie recording even when the camera is not set to the movie mode. Switching back to still image shooting is just as easy. To achieve the high resolution and advanced picture quality proper to SLR, the image sensor uses a 4/3-inch 12.3-megapixel High Speed Live MOS Sensor, while the image processing engine uses TruePic V.

The E-PL2 is as mobile as a conventional compact camera. Despite the incorporation of a flash and an image stabilization mechanism, the size and weight of both the body and lens have been reduced. The body color is available in four variations including Champagne Gold, White, Red and Black.

Combining compact, eye-catching designs with full SLR performance, the OLYMPUS PEN series has staked out an important position in the digital SLR market. To expand the entry-level user segment and meet growing market demand with a wider line-up, we are proud to introduce the new E-PL2, a new generation system camera with richer expressive power and higher functionality to supplement the E-PL1.

Olympus is planning to enhance the "OLYMPUS PEN" new generation system camera series to create a wider market for the series.

*1: The OLYMPUS PEN E-PL1 obtained the 2010 Good Design Award (Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization). The key to this honor was the design of the new Live Guide interface.
*2: The OLYMPUS PENPAL Communication Accessory can be connected only to Accessory Port 2.

When combined with the compact new M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 II standard zoom lens, the total weight is just 474 grams. With the PEN series, Olympus has leveraged the power of the Micro Four Thirds System standard to fulfil its commitment to offering SLR-style cameras that deliver true SLR performance in a compact, user-friendly design that can be taken anywhere, anytime.
  4. The MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism built into the lenses in the lens kits enables fast AF operation and quiet movie recording. The face detection AF employs an "eye detect AF" that adjusts focus automatically on the subject's eyes during portrait shooting.
    • Fast, quiet autofocusing thanks to the movie-optimized MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 II and M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 lenses provided in the kits incorporate the MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism, which has been optimized to shoot movies, as well as still images. This mechanism is the result of advanced optical design technology developed to enable focusing with fewer and lighter elements. The fast, quiet autofocusing made possible by this mechanism enables stress-free, comfortable shooting of movies and still images.
    • Evolution of face detection AF into "eye detect AF"
In portraits, a picture with the eyes in focus will have more impact and will be more appealing as the eyes help draw the viewer into the image. Olympus has evolved the face detection AF to automate the operation of focusing on the subject's eyes. When the face detection AF is activated and the subject is the upper part of a human body, the "eye detect AF" is activated to adjust the focus on the subject's eyes by automatically measuring the distance of the closer eye and the AF target size. This makes it easy to shoot an appealing portrait in which the eyes are focused accurately.
  5. Excellent operability with a large, easy-to-view 3.0-inch 460,000-dot LCD monitor and a control dial.
    • High-contrast, high-definition Hyper Crystal LCD with maximum angle of view of 176°
The large 3.0-inch LCD monitor has a wide 176° angle of view in the up/down/left/right directions and a 100% field of view. The high-definition LCD with about 460,000 dots (HVGA) has excellent color development and reproduction and ensures easy, comfortable monitoring even in outdoors.
    • Control dial for quick and easy operation
The control dial can be used to adjust the exposure compensation, aperture and/or shutter speed directly during shooting. The functions assigned to the control dial can be modified or removed as desired. Easy control using the cross-cursor buttons is also available just like with the E-PL1.

Other Feature Details

  • 4/3-inch, 12.3-megapixel high-speed Live MOS image sensor and TruePic V image processing engine for high-quality, SLR-class imaging
The OLYMPUS PEN E-PL2 is equipped with a 12.3-megapixel high-speed Live MOS sensor for ultrafast, high-resolution image capture. Thanks to this large sensor, which is the same size as the sensors used in Four Thirds System cameras, the OLYMPUS PEN E-PL2 fully rivals conventional digital SLR cameras in resolution, dynamic range, color fidelity, and fine subject detail.
In addition the TruePic V image processing delivers clearer, higher-resolution images by exploiting the full performance potential of the lens. Sophisticated noise reduction technologies enable high-sensitivity shooting at ISO 6400 without sacrificing image detail, making it possible to capture delicate nuances of color even when shooting in low light without using a flash.
  • Easy-to-operate controls that can be customized to suit various shooting styles
Buttons are kept to a minimum and laid out logically to make the camera simple to use for anyone – even users who have never used an SLR. In addition, more than 60 customization functions are available to allow advanced users to customize camera operations to suit their own shooting styles.
  • Enlarge button for facilitating the focusing and composition check
Each press of the Enlarge button alternates between "full-frame view" and "enlarged view". This button makes it easy to quickly switch back and forth between composition check and focusing. Unlike the MF assist function, this function can check focusing even when a non-MF assist-compatible lens such as an OM lens is used. The magnification ratios available for focusing check can be selected from 7X, 10X and 14X. The 7X magnified image is equivalent to an image with 100% pixel size on a 21-inch (22.54-million-dot) LCD monitor.
  • Magnified-frame AF for small AF target and wide-area AF target
The magnified-frame accessed with the Enlarge button can be used as an AF target frame. The AF target frame according to the selected 7X, 10X or 14X magnification ratio is displayed and autofocusing is performed within the reduced frame. The AF points can be set in a range wider than the 11-point AF with fine position specification equivalent to the use of more than 800 points. When the Enlarge button is pressed after focusing using the magnified-frame AF, the autofocused position is magnified so that the focusing can be checked on the enlarged image. When the S-AF + MF function is used, it is possible to half-press the shutter button for AF and then adjust the focusing more precisely with manual focusing. If the shutter button is half-pressed again, the magnified-frame AF can be performed on the enlarged image.
  • Built-in image stabilization mechanism for compensation of camera shake with any lens
A high-performance image stabilization mechanism is built into the camera body to make image stabilization possible with any Four Thirds lens*1, as well as with Micro Four Thirds lenses. The image stabilization can be used with virtually any lens because, even when a non-Four Thirds lens is used*2, image stabilization is possible by entering the focal length of the lens in the camera.
  • *1 The MMF-1 or MMF-2 Four Thirds Mount Adapter (optional) is required.
*2 The MF-2 OM Mount Adapter (optional) is required with an OM lens and an applicable mount adapter is required when a lens of another type is used.
  • Proven dust reduction system for worry-free lens changes*
When changing lenses, a digital camera's image sensor is inevitably exposed to contamination by airborne dust particles. And if any of those particles adhere to the camera's low-pass filter or image sensor, they appear as spots and blemishes in every photo. Olympus was the first to offer a solution to this troublesome problem with its pioneering SSWF (Super-Sonic Wave Filter), and it has continued to evolve the technology to meet the more stringent dust-protection needs of the mirrorless Micro Four Thirds System standard. The SSWF is highly effective at removing all types of dust, whether held by electrostatic forces or intramolecular bonds.
  • * This technology has been in use since the Olympus began its development of interchangeable lens type digital SLR cameras and has been highly evaluated by professionals and industry associations, winning of the Asahi Shimbun Invention Award, a special award of 2010 National Invention Awards bestowed by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation.
  • Choice of 4 aspect ratios to suit users' creative objectives and display format preferences
Images can be captured at any of four aspect ratios: standard 4:3; widescreen 16:9; 6:6, which is used by medium-format cameras; and 3:2, which is the same as the standard 35mm film format. Subjects can be viewed at the selected aspect ratio in the Live View monitor to confirm that the result suits the user's creative intention and purpose.
  • Multi-exposure function with simultaneous LCD monitor display
Images previously captured and recorded in RAW data format can be displayed on the Live View monitor while framing the current scene, making it easy to create artistically balanced multi-exposure compositions. Automatic gain correction can be performed in-camera, and even non-consecutive shots taken at different times and places can be used superimposed on each other via the play/edit menu (RAW data only, up to 3 images).
  • i-ENHENCE Picture mode for clear imaging with a heightened sense of realism
i-ENHENCE Picture mode delivers exceptionally vibrant and clear images, with a heightened sense of realism that fully captures and communicates the excitement of the moment.
  • Multi-Mix Slideshow playback with background music
Slideshows that mix still images, movies, and sound can be created right in the camera. Six background music compositions by the well-known Japanese music creator DAISHIDANCE are included, with controls for fade-in, fade-out slide transitions, volume adjustment, and audio post-recording.
  • e-Portrait function for smooth rendering of skin texture
e-Portrait scene mode uses special processing to helps make skin appear smoother. When shooting in e-Portrait mode, both processed and unprocessed images are recorded.* In addition, e-Portrait processing can be applied after the fact, so you can use it to further improve the look of the best shot in a series.
  •
    * e-Portrait image size limited to 2560 x 1920; effectiveness varies according to subject
  • MF Assist function for manual focusing with auto image magnification
When focusing manually with any compatible Micro Four Thirds System or Four Thirds System lens, MF Assist automatically magnifies the central portion of the frame by 7x, 10x, or 14x whenever the focus ring is rotated, making it easy to confirm fine focus adjustments on the LCD monitor or Live Viewfinder display. And even when using OM System lenses via an OM Mount Adapter (sold separately), magnification can still be effected manually.
  • Continuous-tracking AF that locks onto subject and tracks movement in the frame
The E-PL2 features a Continuous-Tracking AF function that automatically tracks subject movement within the frame. When the function is active, users can 'lock-on' to a subject by pressing the shutter button half-way; Continuous-Tracking AF will then follow the subject's movements within the frame, adjusting the focus as necessary.
  • Seamless recording of movie and still images using the dedicated Movie button and shutter button
The E-PL2 is equipped with a dedicated Movie mode button to enable instant activation of HD movie recording at any time. Even if the mode dial isn't set to Movie mode, a quick press of this button allows users to switch seamlessly from still image to movie shooting.
Recording is supported at a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9 (1280 x 720, 30fps), as well as a standard aspect ratio of 4:3 (640 x 480, 30fps). As a Micro Four Thirds System camera, the E-PL2 is equipped with a much larger sensor than most handheld camcorders. As a result, it offers superior image quality, the ability to defocus the background by controlling aperture, and all the other creative advantages of interchangeable-lens photography. Built-in electronic image stabilization can be used when shooting movies, and is effective with all Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds System lenses, as well as other lenses.
Manual controls (exposure, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity) and Art Filters can also be used when shooting movies.
Audio is recorded in linear PCM format — an uncompressed digital format noted for its super sound quality. Drawing on Olympus expertise in digital IC recorder technology, it assures outstanding fidelity and dynamic audio presence. After-the-fact audio and sound memos can also be easily added to previously taken photos.
  • Shadow Adjustment Technology for beautifully exposed portraits and group photos
Advanced face detection technology enables the camera to detect up to 8 faces and optimizes focus. The Shadow Adjustment Technology optimizes the exposure to ensure that faces in the foreground and scenery in the background are both properly exposed. Even in backlit situations, auto gradation adjustment can brighten the faces without over-exposing the background, making it easy to capture the scene just as it appears to the human eye. In addition, face detection can be used during image playback to quickly select and magnify subjects to check their facial expression.
  • Gradation Auto to prevent blown highlights and blocked-in shadows
When gradation is set to Auto, Shadow Adjustment Technology optimizes settings to ensure that the camera captures the scene as closely as possible to the way the user sees it, with no blown highlights or blocked-in shadows.
  • HDMI output for high-quality image and movie playback
The camera can be connected to an HDMI-equipped TV set via a commercially available HDMI–HDMI Mini cable to view high-quality HD movies and still images with stereo audio, and when the E-PL2 is connected to a compatible TV set by an HDMI cable (sold separately), the HDMI Control function enables users to control image playback via the TV's remote control unit. It's a great way to enjoy slideshows with the ease and convenience of regular TV programming.
  • * Only when used with an HDMI-CEC compatible TV set. Some operations may not be available depending on the TV set used.
  • High-precision 324-zone digital ESP metering
Three metering modes are offered: high-precision 324-zone digital ESP metering, center-weighted metering, and spot metering. The high-precision digital ESP mode divides the image area into an 18 x 18 grid, metering each of 324 separate areas to obtain optimum exposure with high accuracy even under complex light conditions.
