Image Stabilization mechanism for the first time on a compact digital camera*1, compensating for all types of blurring in still images and movies
OLYMPUS STYLUS SH-50 compact digital camera
Equipped with a 24x optical zoom, and the ability to record movies and still images simultaneously
Olympus Imaging Corporation (President: Haruo Ogawa) is proud to announce the OLYMPUS STYLUS SH-50 compact digital camera. This camera boasts a 24x optical zoom lens, and a 3-axis (still images)/5-axis (movies) image stabilization functionalities, making it possible to compensate for blurring in all situations regardless of the scene, capturing beautiful still images and movies. It is scheduled to go on sale from end of February, 2013.
- The image stabilization mechanism derived from the a New Generation System Camera, OLYMPUS OM-D is used to compensate for all types of blurring via a rotational blur compatible 3-axis for still images, first on any compact digital camera*1, and 5-axis for movies.
- With iHS Technology made possible by the combination of the 16 megapixel*2 high-sensitivity, high-speed Back Side Illuminated CMOS sensor and the high-performance TruePic image processor, high sensitivity, low noise, high-speed AF, and a fast start-up have been achieved.
- The high-powered, 25mm*3 wide-angle to 24x (48x at Super Resolution zoom) optical zoom lens, can capture far-away subjects just as if they are up close.
- The Multi Recoding function enables simultaneous recording of both 16 megapixels still images and Full HD movies.
The STYLUS S series packs a large zoom range into a compact body, equal to that of large and heavy telephoto lenses on SLR cameras, for shooting everything from everyday scenery to concerts, sporting events, and other scenes. The S series is perfect for keeping luggage light while traveling, and the zoom is excellent for shooting graduation ceremonies, school and professional sporting events.
The OLYMPUS STYLUS SH-50 is equipped with a 16 megapixel, high-sensitivity, high-speed Back Side Illuminated CMOS sensor, and a high-performance TruePic image processing engine. The combination of these features makes iHS Technology possible, for high-sensitivity, low-noise, and high-speed AF. Since the STYLUS SH-50 is equipped with a 24x (48x at Super Resolution) optical zoom lens from wide-angle 25mm to telephoto 600mm*3, it is perfect for capturing far-away subjects up close, such as children's expressions during graduation ceremonies or school plays, or close-up action of athletes at sporting events.
Normally, even slight camera shake during telephoto photography highly results in blurring in the image. The STYLUS SH-50 uses an image stabilization drive mechanism derived from the method employed on the Olympus OM-D. In addition to the existing compensation for angular blur that occurs when tilting the camera up, down, left, and right, the STYLUS SH-50 now also compensates for rotational blur that commonly occurs when the shutter button is pressed, a first for a compact digital camera. The 3-axis image stabilization powerfully reduces blurring. While shooting movies, 5-axis image stabilization is available with the additional compensation for shift blur that commonly occurs when the shutter button is pressed. The worlds' first*1 Hybrid 5-axis movie image stabilization, which offers mechanical and electronic correction is now available.
The Multi-recoding function is also used on the STYLUS SH-50. This function enables simultaneous recording of both 16 megapixels still images and Full HD movies. It is especially useful for capturing both still images and movies of graduation ceremonies, school plays and sporting events at the same time.
The STYLUS SH-50 is also equipped with the popular Magic Filter*4 and Beauty Mode*5. With a single touch, users can capture a photo or movie that is a bit different than the normal image, and make subjects look more beautiful for a lasting impression. With Pet Mode*6, the camera automatically detects pets' (dogs and cats) faces and snaps a photo at the best moment, making the STYLUS SZ-16 an enjoyable camera not only for special events, but everyday life as well.
Main Functions - Details
The existing image stabilization function only compensated for 2-axis angular blur that occurs when tilting the camera up, down, left, and right, however, in addition to angular blur compensation, the STYLUS SH-50 also compensates for rotational blur that commonly occurs when the shutter button is pressed, first for a compact digital camera. Blur compensation has evolved into a 3-axis function for still images. In addition to compensating for shift blur that occurs when moving the camera up, down, left, right, horizontally, and vertically while shooting a movie, powerful compensation is also provided for rotational blur by both mechanical and electronic correction, making the world's first 5-axis image stabilization possible. These factors maximize iHS Technology and high-powered zoom lens performance, allowing users to capture high-quality, stable, blur-free images and movies even at telephoto settings. Even in dark locations, hand-held shots without the flash will reproduce the beauty of the scene naturally. Since this function also compensates for blurring that occurs when shooting movies while walking, it is especially useful for capturing memorable moments, such as while traveling.
iHS Technology stands for "intelligence", "high-speed", and "high-sensitivity". With the combination of the high-sensitivity, high-speed Back Side Illuminated CMOS sensor, and the high-performance TruePic image processor developed for the OLYMPUS PEN, high sensitivity, low noise, high-speed AF, and a fast start-up have been achieved. Even in backlit, or nighttime scenes, the camera can beautifully capture images, just as they are seen by the human eye. High-speed processing allows for inclusion of the Hand-held starlight and the HDR backlit correction, which quickly captures multiple images with a single shot at different exposures and automatically merges them into a single image. With Super Resolution technology, double the digital zoom is available, with virtually no image degradation. As an Intelligence technology, iAUTO can automatically detect up to 29 different scenes.
Starlight Shooting Mode
With a single press of the shutter button, multile continuous images are taken at high speed. The images are then precisely overlapped to form a vivid night scene image with minimal shadows and noise. A flash is now possible when using this mode. With a flash light to the person, beautiful photography is possible when shooting both night scene and portrait.
Photo& Movie Capture
This function allows users to capture a full pixel (16 megapixel) still image while simultaneously shooting Full HD movies. Since continuous shooting is available, that perfect moment can always be captured. Touch shutter is also available while shooting a movie.
Photo with Movie Clip
A movie is automatically recorded for a set time before the shutter button is pressed, at 3 seconds before, 5 seconds before, and 7 second intervals. The 3 seconds after the shutter button is pressed will also be recorded as a movie. When viewing images afterward, the recorded movies can also be viewed, enhancing the memories of the scene.
Advanced Movie Mode
A newly added Advanced Movie Mode in mode dial makes it possible to select the shooting options of the Photo & Movie Capture, the 60i movie and the high-speed movie.
Smooth and high quality Full HD movie can be recorded with 60 fields per second speed.
High Speed movie
240fps (432 x 324) and 120fps (1280 x 720) shooting are available as slow motion movie in playback.
Full High-Definition Movies (MOV/H.264)*7
With a 1920 x 1080 High-definition size, and MOV/H.264 movie compression for excellent compatibility with computers, longer, more beautiful movies can be recorded. With a dedicated movie button, starting and stopping movies is easy with a single touch.
The STYLUS SH-50 is also equipped with Multi-Motion Movie IS image stabilization. In combination with hybrid 5-axis movie IS (for the first time on a compact digital camera), gradual camera shake that commonly occurs when shooting a movie while walking is compensated for, allowing users to more fully enjoy shooting beautiful, high-quality movies.
The popular Magic Filter offers 11 different filters to choose from: Dramatic, Fragmented, Pop Art, Pin Hole, Fish Eye, Soft Focus, Punk, Watercolor, Sparkle, Miniature, and Reflection. Pop Art, Pin Hole, Fish Eye, Soft Focus, Punk, Watercolor, Miniature, and Reflection can also be used when shooting movies.
Beauty Mode allows users to apply the desired makeup effect to up to three people at the same time during shooting or playback, and to register 3 favorite patterns of makeup for ease of use.
This function offers a full range of different makeup effects that will make women happy. In a menu screen designed to be similar to a cosmetic palette, effects such as blush, eye shadow, false eyelashes, and eye color and sizes can be changed and applied easily, along with effects to make faces appear smaller, and lifting effects to make subjects more beautiful.
Pet Mode (Scene Mode)
Dogs and cats are automatically detected. By selecting Pet-cat or Pet-dog modes, the camera will automatically detect cats or dogs and focus on their faces. Up to ten dog or cat faces can be detected. Capture pets' cute expressions. With Auto Shutter, the camera will automatically shoot when a pet faces the camera head-on. With this function, users won't miss the whimsical antics of their pets. (Auto Shutter can detect only one pet.)
Smartphone Application: OLYMPUS Image Share
With the iPhone and Android compatible smartphone application OLYMPUS Image Share, and the Toshiba FlashAirTM*8 SDHC card with an internal wireless LAN, uploading images to social networking services is easier than ever before. Using the smartphone connection function included on the camera to set up a FlashAirTM card makes Wi-Fi connection simple. With the OLYMPUS Image Share application, users can easily load images onto a smartphone via a thumbnail index, add Art Filters on a smartphone, and share images on various social networking services. When connecting to multiple smartphones simultaneously, images can be shared with friends and family.
