- Live Composite: Light trails of stars can be captured while observing them through the Live View
- New Art filter: Vintage and Partial Color to heighten emotive powers of expression
- Silver body: Special attention given to texture
Released in October 2013, the OM-D E-M1 is a flagship model of Olympus Compact System Cameras. The model features a tough body that combines the compact size and light weight one common to Compact System Cameras with superior dustproof, splashproof, and freezeproof capabilities, and adds to this an on-chip phase detection auto focus (AF). As a Compact System Camera that synthesizes the traditional Single-Lens Reflex cameras that produced the superior image quality one expects of Olympus with all Zuiko lens systems, it has been highly evaluated not just by camera hobbyists but many professional photographers as well.
With firmware Version 2.0, the model is now equipped with the system for controlling the camera from a computer that has been a necessity for studio photography and has had its capabilities as gear for professionals bolstered. It is further outfitted with a variety of new features developed since the initial release of the OM-D E-M1 - including a keystone compensation feature, Live Composite, and new Art Filters - and so brings together all the functions that a flagship product needs.
Firmware Version 2.0 is being offered pre-installed on this latest model, which comes in the new body color of silver. The firmware for existing OM-D E-M1 cameras can also be upgraded to Version 2.0, with support for all its features.

Details of Main Features
1. Camera control system: A necessity for professional studio photography
The model is now equipped with a system for controlling the camera from a computer, in response to a request from a professional photographers for studio photography. The workflow of the professional photographer is powerfully supported when using our specialized and newly developed OLYMPUS Capture software.*1
With this camera control system, you can connect your OM-D E-M1 to a computer via USB cable to take photos, change settings, and speedily transfer the photos you have taken. The camera's Live View images are displayed in the OLYMPUS Capture software on your computer in real time, and you can take photos from either the camera or the computer while still connected without having to do any switching.
Since there is no need to mirror lock-up with a Compact System Camera, you can operate the camera itself with the Live View displayed on the computer. With this, it has become possible to make precision focus adjustments on a large computer screen, check what images have been saved, and give smooth directions to models and assistants in the studio. It creates a stress-free environment where the photographer can concentrate on snapping his or her shots, while also making it possible to improve collaboration with the other parties involved in a shoot. The compact size and light weight body common to Compact System Cameras copes flexibly with both the mobility and adjustments of working in a studio as well as more dynamic camerawork elsewhere.
The usability one expects of a Compact System Camera where you can regularly control both your computer and camera in the same state lends itself to professional-level quality and speed.
2. Keystone Compensation: Enables taking photographs by adjusting the trapezoidal distortions and emphasize perspective while checking compensation effects
This new feature provides the same feel as what you get when using a shift lens to take photographs. It allows you to adjust the trapezoidal distortions and emphasize perspective by controlling with two dials while looking at the Live View. With this function, anyone can easily adjust the trapezoid whenever and whichever lenses you use, as there is no need for a special lens and it enables auto focusing, and hand-held shooting. When combined with our dustproof, splashproof and freezeproof lenses, you can expand your shooting range even in a rain.
3. Live Composite: Light trails of stars can be captured while observing them through the Live View
Our very well-regarded Live Composite function from the OM-D E-M10 has been installed in this version. This feature allows you to present beautiful unbroken trails of light like those from the diurnal motions of the stars, fireworks, or fireflies in flight by compositing only those elements that change brightly even in situations where everything becomes too bright like in regular bulb photography. Just like in Live Bulb photography, this makes it possible to make careful shooting while checking the end result on the monitor. Furthermore, by using it in combination with flash photography you can create photos where a single instant and the flow of time exist in one frame, or have fun using a penlight to write messages with light.
4. New Art Filer: Vintage and Partial Color to heighten emotive powers of expression
We added two new Art Filters: Vintage and Partial Color come up with by designers particularly interested in getting into more emotive forms of expression. They make it easier to create artistic photos that better bring out the images the photographer captures.
1) New Art Filter: "Vintage"
Gives a nostalgic expression to casual everyday scenes, transforming them into "a special photo that has stood the test of time."
1)-1. Three types of finish
Type I: Produces a vintage look in photos by adding effects like discoloration as in a burned print. The disrupted balance among the shades results in a snap that strongly makes one sense the presence of the light.
Type II: Nicely faded colors lend the nostalgic feel of an old photograph. This effect beautifully brings out the appeal of a woman's skin and is the optimal filter for selfies.
Type III: Produces a sophisticate feel like an old print through the use of gently faded tones. Effectively renders metallic textures and the like.
1)-2. New Art Effect: "Shade Effect"
This effect gives a sense of wideness by inserting bands of shading on the left and right sides (or tops and bottoms).
2) New Art Filter: "Partial Color"
Emphasizes a specific part of photo, done by choosing one specific color and leaving all the rest in black and white. Makes your photographic subjects more impressive.
2)-1. Color Ring for intuitively selecting what color to leave behind
Rotate the main dial to select which color you want to leave (the color you want to emphasize) from among the 18 colors available, including neutral hues. The effects are shown on the Live View, so you can make your color choices intuitively.
2)-2. Three types of finish
Type I: Leave colors with natural gradations based around the color you have selected to make your photographic subject stand out.
Type II: Leave a slight amount of colors in addition to the one you select to finish the snap in a style like a scene from a movie.
Type III: Leave only the color you have selected to finish the snap for a stronger emphasis of a single color.
5. Silver body: Special attention given to texture
"A real tool for professional use," the OM-D E-M1 offers performance and features that does not choose any shooting environment. . From a design perspective, too, the model as a tool for professionals offers the fascinations to be had from a piece of photographic equipment. With the black body, our focus was on the functional beauty one finds in such equipment. With the new silver body option, our goal was to provide a more classical equipment feel. We used the deep silver inherited from the OM models of the film era for coating the magnesium body. We used machined aluminum for the metal dials and camera operation controls, and that cutting line finish dyes the silver more strikingly and beautifully. The silver is deep and brilliant one, lending the model a classical camera feel.
