Olympus Corporation (President: Hiroyuki Sasa) announced the international launch by its Scientific Solutions Business of the CKX-CCSW Confluency checker software for biological microscopes, commencing on December 2. CKX-CCSW provides a simple way to perform cell counts and density measurements in culture vessels.
With the growth of research into iPS cells and other aspects of regenerative medicine has come a demand for the efficient high-volume culturing of cells for use in various experimental and other research activities. Cells are grown in culture vessels using a growth medium that provides nutrients. Each type of cell has an upper limit on the density to which they grow in the culture vessel. Accordingly, once cell growth has proceeded to a certain extent, some of the cells are transferred to a new culture vessel where growth can continue. To ensure that cells are cultured under consistent conditions, it is essential that these transfers ("subculture") be performed at appropriate timings.
The new CKX-CCSW provides a simple way to perform cell counts and density measurements. This can be used to monitor the cells in the culture vessel and determine the best time to perform a transfer. Use of the CKX-CCSW together with the CKX53 culture microscope and Cell Counter model R1 automatic cell counter provides a solution previously unavailable in the field of regenerative medicine research that both reduces workloads and achieves more reliable quality in the cell culturing process.
