Sponsorship Olympus Corporation
Date October 28, 2019
Venue Tokyo / Japan
Participants 45 students
Event Outline Olympus designed a curriculum for inquiry-based learning, which was implemented at Hachiojihigashi High School, on the topic of the early detection and treatment of cancer through the use of endoscopes. Students following this curriculum are required to identify and research cancer-related issues by taking an in-depth look at endoscopes. The first session of this long-term project, which will run from October 2019 to March 2020, took place on October 28. The 45 students in attendance leaned about the state of cancer screening in Japan and the importance of endoscopy in early detection and treatment of cancer from Olympus members visiting the school, while also gaining hands-on experience operating an endoscope. The students, who had never touched an endoscope and treatment tools before, were "amazed at how endoscopy lets you remove cancerous tissues from the body with a treatment tool that passes through such a tiny hole" and concluded that "more people should be aware that the early detection and treatment of cancer is made possible through endoscopy."
