Sales Manager of Medical Business in Singapore

Q: Why did you join Olympus?

I was looking for a company which truly believes in changing people's lives for the better.

I developed a curiosity for healthcare technology at a young age when one of my family members was diagnosed with cancer. I wondered about the evolution of these medical devices and how they help at various stages from diagnosis of a disease to determining the best medical treatments. The arguably substantial cost of medical here in Singapore has also led me into thinking about the healthcare eco-system. I was looking for a company that not only creates the best technologies but also one which truly believes in changing people's lives for the better. As an important player in various healthcare segments, I wanted and am glad to be a part of this community and Olympus has given me nothing but a sense of pride and accomplishment ever since.

Q: What do you do at Olympus, and what motivates you?

Seeing how our products are being utilized by doctors in helping their patients is rewarding.

My job requires me to wear several hats throughout the day. As a Sales Manager of surgical devices in Singapore region, my core duties include presenting our innovations to the market and being actively involved in business development, at the same time create and maintain good relationships with our clients. Seeing how our products are being utilized by doctors in helping their patients is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling part of my job. Apart from sales, people management could also be challenging at times but ultimately nothing is more gratifying to me when we achieve Olympus' business goals as a team!

Q: What is a typical day for you?

Given the dynamic nature of my work, my day-to-day schedule varies depending on the number of internal or external meetings. An example of a day could be:

9:00 – 10:00: Check emails and follow up on any pending issues/approvals

10:00 – 10:30: Meeting with business support team to address issues

10:30 – 12:00: Internal meeting with marketing team regarding product issues, turnaround strategy

12:00 – 12:45: Lunch

12:45 – 13:30: Meeting with supply chain team for order fulfilment/inventory issues

13:30 – 16:00: Customer meetings

16:00 – 17:30: Team meetings to review on updates and progress


Q: What subjects did you like most in school, and what skills do you think are needed for your job?

Various knowledge and skills are helpful for my job.

Back in school my favorite subjects were Mathematics and Physics. My strong interest in Math has helped a lot in sales and related management, whereas Physics has eased my learning curve on the technical aspects of our products. These aside, my job requires strong interpersonal and communication skills as I liaise with both external and internal parties. Other skills like the ability to multitask and good time management are also essential to this job.

Q: What do you think about corporate contributions to society?

Being a part of the sales team means that we are the frontline of the business. We introduce technologies to the medical industry, and we assist doctors and nurses in product trainings. In other words, we are in the position where we contribute to the society through the utilizing of these medical devices. We are truly making a positive impact everyday through our jobs and this empowerment keeps me and my team motivated!
