Olympus Corporation (President: Hiroyuki Sasa) is pleased to announce the new compact digital camera, OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-870 Tough, scheduled to go on sale on February 26, 2016. This all-around camera features five main Tough capabilities, a 21mm^*1 ultra wide-angle zoom lens, and 180° tilting LCD monitor, along with a versatile array of new shooting functions.

The Tough series is a model equipped with the five Tough capabilities, waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, freezeproof, and crushproof, pursuing the concept of worry-free shooting underwater, on snowy mountains, and other harsh environments that other cameras could not endure. The OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-870 Tough, with its five Tough capabilities and ultra wide-angle 21mm^*1, 5x optical zoom lens, makes it easy and fun to shoot wide-open scenery such as mountains and snow-covered fields, ocean scenes, and other active locations. Its 180° tilting LCD monitor also provides a variety of angles for shooting including easy self portraits (selfies). Main Features Details

1. Five main Tough capabilities: Waterproof up to 15 m^*2, dustproof^*3, shockproof up to 2.1 m^*4, freezeproof up to -10°C^*5, and crushproof up to 100 kgf^*6

With improvements to the waterproof sealing mechanisms, waterproof up to 15m^*2 is achieved on the OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-870 Tough. Shock-absorbing mechanisms with shock-absorbing materials placed inside the camera, and a double chassis construction results in clearing drop test from a height of up to 2.1 m. It is also durable enough to withstand crushing up to 100 kgf^*6. In addition to the capability to withstand up to -10°C^*5 in low temperature environments, a dustproof design^*3 is used, which brings out the true value of this camera when used in punishing environments such as underwater, on snowy mountains, rocky slopes, etc, where other digital devices fear to tread.

2. 21mm^*1 ultra wide-angle, 5x optical zoom lens

Superb optical technology cultivated over many years is crystallized in this camera for an extremely rare wide-angle 21mm^*6, 5x zoom lens, among compact cameras. The waterproof, splashproof ultra wide-angle zoom lens is not only great for capturing wide-open landscapes such as the mountains and seaside, but is also advantageous in cramped locations where the photographer may hesitate to step back. This lens also compensates for distortion that easily occurs around the edges of images captured on an ultra wide-angle lens. When taking selfies, the camera even compensates for distortion of faces in the corners of shots that causes an unnatural look in images. While achieving the ultra wide-angle lens, the camera is kept compact with a new prism processing a high refractive index, and Super HR lenses.

3. High-definition 180° tilting LCD monitor, Face button, and Self Portrait mode

This camera is equipped with a 180° tilting LCD monitor that makes a variety of shooting styles possible, including low and high angle shots. A 920,000 dot high-definition LCD monitor is used to reproduce the finest details of the scene, and an improved maximum brightness level makes it easy to see even under bright sunlight. The Face button on the front of the camera can be used as a shutter release button, as well as for recording movies and as a LCD monitor boost. Invert display setting detects the camera's direction and LCD position, and automatically switches the display orientation. When used together with the Face button on the front of the camera, selfies are easy to capture with either the right or the left hand. Self Portrait mode is included on the mode dial which automatically controls the camera so that it automatically adjusts the focus on the person holding it, and adjusts the brightness of the AF Illuminator. An easy-to-see self-timer and countdown display are also shown on the LCD monitor. When combined with the 180° tilting LCD monitor, these features make selfies easy.

4. Built-in Wi-Fi^*7 for linking to a smartphone, and high-precision GPS^*8

1) Wi-Fi^*7

With built-in Wi-Fi^*7 and the iPhone and Android compatible smartphone application Olympus Image Share, it is possible to wirelessly connect the camera to a smartphone. Photos captured with the camera can be transferred on the spot, shared via social networking services, and a smartphone can be used as a remote controller for shooting. Touch AF Shutter and zoom operation can also be controlled by smartphone in Program and iAUTO modes, as well as 5 Scene mode options perfect for night scenes, while viewing images on the smartphone's screen. Initial settings are easy by just scanning the QR code displayed on the camera screen with a smartphone.

2) GPS^*8

The ability to record location information in images, as well as the route traveled to an SD card is the perfect tool for documenting outdoor activities and travels. Not only is the OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-870 Tough equipped with GPS, but it is also compatible with GLONASS and QZSS for better positioning accuracy than ever before. Additionally, Assist GPS^*8 can be used to significantly reduce time from the beginning of positioning until information is received by downloading satellite information ahead of time via the internet using the computer app OLYMPUS A-GPS Utility or the smartphone app OLYMPUS Image Track. Olympus Image Track can be used to import GPS^*8 logs and photos to a smartphone via Wi-Fi^*7 for display on a map. Recording and managing images with appended location information adds significant value to photos of travels and other activities.

5. Variety of shooting functions such as Art Filter and Live Composite for enhancing the expressive power of photos

All 13 Art Filter options made popular on the Compact System Cameras OLYMPUS PEN and OM-D are included on this model. There are also a variety of functions that enhance imaging expressions, such as Live Composite for capturing light trails, and Nightscape Movie mode^*9 which has been optimized for capturing light tones for night scenes.

1) Art Filter for enhanced expressive power

Art Filter is an Olympus original feature that brings out the image the photographer has in mind for enjoying more creative photography. With this feature, anyone can easily enjoy creative still images and movies. Six new Art Filter options have been added to the OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-870 Tough for a total of 13 different types.

Cross Process

Digitally reproduces the unexpected colors obtained by processing slide film as negative film. This effect lends an unstable, imaginary atmosphere to images.

Firm shadows and relaxed contrast lend a graceful and elegant sepia tone to images.

Vintage

Gives a nostalgic air to regular, everyday scenes for a special shot that has stood the test of time.

Key Line

Emphasizes edge lines for an illustration effect on photos.

Watercolor

By boldly removing the dark areas, blending pale and bright colors onto a white canvas, and laying down softened outlines, a bright atmosphere is created.

2) Live Composite

This feature merges only the changes in bright sections of multiple photos captured successively, beautifully capturing the light trails of subjects such as stars, fireworks, and street lights. It also lets user enjoy unique photos of light art created by 'drawing' images in the air with a pen light. Shooting is easy by simply pressing the shutter release button and user can check the progress on the camera monitor while shooting. Because the LCD monitor rotates 180°, user can flip the monitor to see an estimate of the finished image.

*9 Nightscape Movie mode is activated when Night + Portrait, Live Composite, Hand-held Starlight, Fireworks, and Night Scene are selected in Scene mode.

Other Features

Sportcam mode that captures active scenes

This model is equipped with Sportcam mode for optimal selection of shooting functions in active scenes. An approximately 90° diagonal ultra wide angle is available for shooting movies, making it easy to keep subjects in the frame even in sports scenes with a great deal of movement. When the camera is attached to a backpack or belt using the optional Sport Holder CSCH-123, user can capture impressive scenes with a push of the Face button on the front of the camera in a situation where normally difficult to hold the camera, such as canoeing, rafting, and climbing.

1) Smooth 60p^*10 movie

Recording progressive movies at 60 frames per second is possible. In addition to Full HD image quality, user can enjoy movies that reproduce smooth and natural motion. 1080 60p, 720 60p, and 480 60p are available.

2) High-speed Movie^*10

This function lets user record 240fps (640x360) and 120fps (854x480) High-speed Movies. Split-second movements can then be viewed in slow motion playback.

3) Time Lapse Movie^*10

This function lets user record moving sports scenes in specific time frames (0.5, 1, 3, 6, 12, 30 sec.) and play them back as a movie with dropped frames. Night Scene Time Lapse Movie, which automatically adapts to dark scenes is added to this model, providing an expanded range of shooting scenes.

4) Sport Burst shooting

This function lets user set a shutter interval from 0.05 to 60 seconds for sequential shooting. Because user can select the optimal shutter interval for a variety of sports scenes, shooting everything from difficult to capture instantaneous movements to normal scenes are easy.

1) Sport Holder, CSCH-123

This holder lets user attach the camera vertically or horizontally to a backpack or belt, and can be easily removed with a single hand. Because the power button and shutter release button can be used even when the holder is attached to the camera, user can easily take photos in sport scenes that require both hands. This holder is equipped with a carabiner and spiral safety cord to prevent drops so user never has to worry about losing the camera. This accessory can be used even in the rain or seawater, making it an absolute necessity when shooting in harsh outdoor environments.

2) Mesh Camera Case, CSCH-121

This is a camera case for the Tough series. The majority of the case is made of silicone rubber with a mesh design that allows air through. This design makes it excellent at draining water and letting in air. Because no part of this case includes metal (even the carabiner), user never has to worry about the case rusting when it gets wet.

3) Underwater Case, PT-057

This is an underwater case with resistant up to 45m underwater. With this accessory user can enjoy ultra wide-angle 21mm shooting even underwater. Because the Face button can also be used underwater, user can easily activate any function that has been pre-assigned to the button for stress-free underwater shooting. Also, by using the dedicated Underwater Flash UFL-3, which is compatible with the Olympus Wireless RC Flash System equipped on the OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-870 Tough, user can enjoy true underwater flash photography.

4) Dedicated Silicone Jacket, CSCH-124

This silicone jacket improves the camera grip in punishing environments and protects the camera from scratches. Even when using the silicone jacket, the Face button on the front of the camera, the tripod sockets on the bottom and sides, and the tilting LCD monitor can be used as usual.
