In Vietnam, gastric and colorectal cancers are among the top five cancers with the highest incidence rates, and early detection and treatment of these diseases is an urgent issue. While the demand for endoscopy, which is essential for early detection and treatment of cancer, is increasing, the number of physicians with the advanced knowledge and skills required for endoscopic care remains in short supply.
In the latest installment of Olympus Corporation (Olympus)’ “True to Life Stories,” featuring stories of how Olympus is contributing to making people's lives healthier, safer and more fulfilling through advanced medical technologies and solutions, we highlight the “Train the Trainer Program” (TTT Program) supported by our subsidiary, Olympus Medical Systems Vietnam Co., Ltd. The TTT Program aims to train endoscopists in Vietnam by inviting Japanese practitioners to teach the skills necessary for Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection* (ESD). By passing on the knowledge to the next generation of endoscopists, the program plays a significant role in supporting the future of Vietnam’s healthcare.
* Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) is a procedure in which the endoscope is used to incise and detach the mucosa around the lesion with a high-frequency knife.
Activities to Support the Training of Doctors in Vietnam
In addition to the TTT Program, Olympus conducts various activities to promote endoscopic technology in Vietnam. For instance, from November 2022 until March 2023, Olympus participated in a project in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan to conduct a survey study for international expansion of AI diagnosis support system and education for doctors in Vietnam.
