Giving back to society through CSR activities

Naoki Okada
Chief Executive Officer (Representative Director), Olympus Korea

Having engaged in sales operations in the medical business in Japan and overseas, I became the representative of OKR in 2015. The Olympus Group unveiled its new corporate philosophy "Making people's lives healthier, safer and more fulfilling" in 2018. Under this corporate philosophy, OKR has also set its corporate vision of becoming a company that contributes to the health and happiness of the Korean society. OKR's CSR activities are in line with this philosophy and contribute to society by using the knowledge gained through business. I am proud of employees who are supporting the implementation of CSR activities with sincerity. OKR also prides itself that its program was selected as the Excellent Program for Cooperation between the Public and Private Sectors by Arts Council Korea, a public institution affiliated with the Korean government.
I believe that the purpose of CSR is to "give back" to society what we have gained in business by obtaining the trust of the people of the country in which we do business. I sometimes participate in CSR activities as a volunteer. And my belief about CSR has grown stronger as I saw people who look forward to such activities and employees who are doing their best by giving others emotional support. If employees work sincerely by empathizing with people and feel that they are contributing to the society, it is rewarding giving a sense of fulfillment, impacting business positively, and leading to create a cycle to "give back" to society. Although each country has a different philosophy regarding CSR, I think it would be great if this cycle spread in the entire Olympus Group.
